I know this could be a loaded question but I am asking for legitimate answers please.  No bashing is wanted, if you want to argue do it between yourselves with a PM.

Thinking of going back to a dually from 3/4 ton truck.  Have always had duramax diesels.  Five of them to be exact, and no not all of it was happy.  Reason there were 5.  Anyway the 07 I have now is the best one yet.  Good truck.  Nothing at all wrong with it except that sometimes I over load it and it just doesnt handle at all like a dually would.

If you were to go back with something what would it be and why?  Ford is out of the question.  So I guess its between dodge and GM.  I really like the dodge but have never owned one.  Some of my fellow men tell me the dodge out pulls the gm.  I have no clue, but each of them swear to it.  Two of them went from Gm to Dodge.  I pull everything from a 18' bumper pull, 32' gooseneck flat bed, 4 horse dressing room trailer, to a 16' shortwall 4 horse LQ trailer (not with the 3/4 ton, its pulled with MDT).  So pulling something during the week most of the time.  Most of it loaded or over loaded.  Moved hay last week with the flat bed with 20, 800 pound rolls.

Just wondering.  I also suspect that if I did do something it will be after some of this mess subsides in next few weeks(months) with the auto makers.

I have a 2007 Ouad cab DODGE that came from the factory as a cab n chassis and we added a CM hauler bed and firestone air bags. Overall we LOVE THE TRUCK! First 20-k miles the fuel mileage was low, now we get 15 unloaded and 12 loaded pulling a 20-k trailer. The factroy exhaust brake is wortht's weight in gold. We went with the c/c model to get the better automatic transmission and comes with a 3 year 180-k warranty vs. a 3 year 36-k warranty that comes on the regular 3/4 tons and factory dually trucks.
I looked and asked the same questions for months before I bought this one. Most dealers tried to tell me that the transmissions was the same until I found a dealer that has fleet trucks then I got the truth. My is pretty much the same truck as the new Sterling that is out now. I wish I would have waited and gone with the 4500, to get the 19.5 tires and wheels. Hope this helps, GOOD LUCK!

I wonder about the ride of the dodge vs the gm.  I drive it daily sometimes with customers that are not used to riding in anything like 1 tons, they are used to half ton pickups.  My previous gm's rode great.

The 19.5's and bigger brakes would be ok but not the ride from the 4500.  The ford 4500 is pretty harsh compared to a 1ton.  Honestly I think my 4400 rides better than they do, but then again its air ride.

It sure don't ride like the GM's but I bought this one to haul with and I just figured it was a little give and take.  Give a little ride to get a GREAT haul!  My I did get the longest bed that would work (9' and a few inches) to help smooth out the ride and I can haul 4 small round bales easy and 40 to 50 square bales depending on if I have help loadingor not.

Just don't go test drive one without a bed!

Hogtown, are you having any trouble with the exhaust filter. We know of a couple that bought a new dodge and hate it because of that. Their truck has been in the shop contantly. We have an 05 which we love but don't know about the newer ones. We also heard that you can no longer get the six speed manual tranny in the new trucks? Any truth to that?

I pull the LQ trailer now with a 4400.  Before that I used a 05 1 ton duramax.  With the trailer dead empty, no water, no gas, fresh from factory it made the helper springs touch the rubber stops.

How heavy is that?  I wonder.

I wonder how a dodge would hold that, not that I would use it but wonder what it would do.

knock on wood! No problems at all! But I try and make sure I buy fuel at stations that that has lots of traffic and make sure it is the NEW FUEL! I can't tell you how many stations I went to when we bought this truck last year and went to fill up and seen that they still had the old fuel. That is the number 1 killer for the filters. Once in a great while is fine.
When I bought mine the dealer was trying to talk me into a 6 speed, but I am lazy and with the 3/180-k mile warranty I went with the 6 speed auto and love it! It shifts really smooth when loaded unlike the older trucks. I have seen a few 08's with the 6 speed manuel, but now the dealers are telling me that this new asian automatic is along the same line as the allison automatic that is used in GM and larger trucks.

Well, the trailer we have I tried on an 06 Chevy before I bought another Dodge and it set the Chevy down, but did not on the Dodge.  I added Firestone airbags just for piece of mind.  Our trailer unloaded weighs 12,740lbs and has a 8800lbs axle weight which means almost 4-k lbs on the truck.  If you was around here I would let you try it on mine and see what you think.

A very good friend just bought a new 08 Dodge CC long box DRW with the six speed manual tranny. Took it on a 600 mile trip this weekend to break it in. Asked him about his mileage. Twelve on the way out and when the odometer hit 600 miles on the way home, it jumped to 15-16. Of course I reminded him that he had a 40 mph tail wind helping him come home. (I know it will get better after about 20,000 miles.)

Tail wind would make a diff. Also, if his truck is an actual "dually" instead of a cab and chassis model he is more than likely going to have 3.73 gears. The cab and chassis model are standard with 4.10 gears.
