Just back from camping and trail riding for a week at Shawnee State Forest in southern Ohio. The trails are very difficult; rated 3.5 out of 4 by a member of the Ohio horse council that we met on the trail. The difficulty is in the quarter-mile to half-mile long, 30-40* steep climbs (not cliff-edge riding) and then back down and then back up and then back down..you get the idea! We were told that riding in the Smokey Mountains was not as difficult as this terrain! And it is simply beautiful there with many rocky creek crossings with water available, scenic hill-top views as well as oasis stops with hitching posts, picnic table and a mounting block located on several trails. Thanks to the Ohio trail riders association and the Ohio DNR for giving us and our horses a place to rest.
We camped at Ben's Happy Trails where you cannot find a more gracious host who will serve you a HUGE and delicious breakfast. We stalled our horses in the barn and also used a large outdoor corral. Our large campsite was private along side a creek with loads of firewood delivered free of charge. Be sure to take a converter for your 30 amp cord to plug into 110V. Also the nearest town with groceries is a half-hour away.
