We normally keep our tack in our trailer year round, is it better to bring in the leather tack for the winter?  What negative effect does the freezing temperatures have on leather if any?

I've left my tack out in the barn and in the horse trailer year round with no problems and I live in NE Michigan. Some of my show stuff, like my western show saddle/bridle/halter, I might bring inside for the winter.(Good excuse to clean the stuff!) Otherwise it is out year round. If you try to clean and condition your tack once in awhile, you should be fine. If it brings you peace of mind to bring your stuff in your house, then by all means go ahead.

I like to bring my stuff in from the barn due to mice. I bring my saddles in the trailer because I don't ride very often in the snow and my hubby built me a nice little tack room in the basement.

I live in Alaska and have temps that drop below - 60 at times. I leave alot of my tack in my trailer year around. Its protected from mice and such. Also its not like the temps are a drastic change. It slowy gets cold and then warm. I clean my tack once in spring-summer-fall and it all turns out great. I have never had a problem as of yet. The only thing I can suggest via a friend is make sure your tack room in your trailer is dry. He had a watertank freeze and then leak all over the place in the summer. Nasty Mess!!

It also has to do with the quality of leather. Cheap leather won't last as long in freezing or damp temps. I have a saddle to prove it. But my higher quality saddles (with better leather) did just fine.

leave most of my stuff outside, in the tack room generally covered with a towel or in the trailer. I don't have super expensive stuff so it doesn't break my heart if it gets dirty or cold
