We have had a ton of rain and our pasture is now a mucky mess. Always wet. Our 20 yr old mare has a horrible case of thrush in her right front hoof. The frog is really deteriorated. What can I do? Should I put a boot on her to try and keep it dry? She is limping now. I can put kopertox on it but then she is going right back out in ankle deep mud, wet grass or water puddles.

I would contact your veterinarian to get a product specifically used to treat thrush and he should advise you how to care for your horse's problem.

Good luck! Hopefully this rain will stop and things will dry up soon !

The only way you are going to clear up the thrush is to keep it dry. Kopertox, or any other medication, won't do any good if her feet can not dry out. That would mean keeping her out of the pasture. I wouldn't suggest putting a boot on her 24/7. Those tend to irritate the bulbs of their feet at some time. Plus, are you going to find one tall enough that the mud won't seep over the top? First off you need to find a dry place for her, like a stall. Then treat it with medication. If it is as bad as you say it is, the vet may be able to give you something that works stronger/faster than any other OTC meds.

I think you are right, Krys. I have seen some boots that come up to the ankle but I was not considering that it may irritate her to be on all the time. The farrier is going to come out tonight and trim her feet and par away the damaged frog. I have read about a home remedy which is just Betadine and table sugar. Made like a paste and painted on. Has anyone ever tried that?

The Betadine is to make it clean of bacteria and the sugar will draw out moisture, like sugar does to strawberries.  Best bet is to talk to the vet and keep the horse inside when the pasture is a mess.

There is a purple medication for dogs and horses called "Pad Kote" a 2 oz bottle will run about $7. It is very effective esp if used in conjunction with hoof trimming. If necessary, your vet can give an iodine iv course of treatment. I had to do this when I picked up a horse form an alleged trainer. We went straight to the farrier and he sent us on to the vet (called the vet and said we needed to see him right then, that the farrier had done all he could). That horse need 3 iv treatments, one week apart, had to have his feet packed and bandaged(this is too long). So my point (finally) is don't let this go too long. Best wishes.

As the others have said get him somewhere the feet can dry.  Another product I like and have had success with is the Sav-a-hoof treatments.  These can be used for Thrush and white line as well as some others.  The one I have used the most is the gel, which does last a little while if you can't treat every day. Put it on and let it dry and it will maintain through moisture exposure (including urine).  My farrier has also been quite impressed with the results of the treatments.

Rose, the purple stuff is available in people form called gentian violet as well, basically the same stuff.

Thanks for everyone's advice. The farrier came out and trimmed her feet. He actually said that her thrush was not that bad but that she was shedding her frog. And we did the betadine and sugar thing and moved her up to the drier pasture. So we shall see.

i have had that problem with my mare, but used bleach on her foot and it was gone, no problems from using it, and my vet said it works great and many barns use that remedy. It is cheap also.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE...Do Not put straight bleach in your horses hoof.  Mix with water untill you can hardly smell it.  It burns ( gets really hot ) feels like they are on fire to their knees.  You might notice them running in circles or stomping.  Yes, I learned the hard way.  I had to hose the horse down, soak his feet in water.  Diluted works great !!! My vet told me to use strait bleach on a ringworm.  He said it will irritate the skin, but will kill the fungus right away.
