We have a Tennesse Walker who eats good, but doesn't keep weight on no matter what.  He is wormed regularly.  What can we do to get him to put weight on?

How long have you had him?  Was he wormy when you got him?  How are his droppings?

I've got a mare that is impossible to keep weight on.  She was full of worms when we brought her home and has permanent intestinal damage.  My vet scoped her and found lots of scarring.   When was he last time his teeth were checked?

Some horses that are wormed regularly still have worms that don't show up in a fecal test. They are doing a powerpac now to rid them. Ask your vet

My daughter's mare has a similar problem and I took her to the vet to have her checked.  She had her teeth checked; blood drawn and all was normal.  So we increased her groceries to a 10% fat feed over the 6% she was on when I purchased her.  She is doing better now and starting to gain.  Purina makes a product called Amplify that also works well to add weight and maintain it.  Both of my kids 4-H horses take it.  Helps with the weight and it doesn't hype them up like feeding rice bran or other fats.  I think it's 30% fat and 12% protein.  It has worked very well, but is not cheap.

I use a product called DAC oil. Just an ounce top dress on the feed is all that is needed. I have seen amazing results with this stuff within a month of feeding it. A friend was selling a horse that they acquired that was underweight, a buyer was concerned about the weight. I gave her some of this oil. The buyer really wanted the horse but said I will be back in 1 month to see how this gelding progressed in weight. The buyer came back in 1 month and bought the gelding, they were so impressed on the weight gain. There is another HT poster here that I recommended this to that started to feed it to a severely underweight horse. They too have seen great changes in the mare and are even riding her now. I also feed this to our show steers for added fat instead of corn. They are in Dover OH and web site is www.feeddac.com.

Exactly which DAC product did you use? Looked at the website and wasn't sure which one to consider.

Here is a link to the product that I order. Even though it says for hair does great for weight gain. If the link doesn't come thru its the Dac oil for hair coat. http://www.feeddac.com/store/mcart.php?ID=33
