I put about 1/2 of a small bottle of Lemon Joy dishwashing liquid in the tank after dumping it,and then put a bunch of ice cubes in.Seems to clean it really well on the drive home.Then once home,I dump it and rinse well with water and add a little CampaChem or any RV stuff.

Yeah,or don't do what I did: we were camped at a nice place with individual sewer tanks,so you just run your hose to it.well,D.A here,I didn't see the need to add anything to the tank,because,nothing was staying in there,right? NOT RIGHT.The trailer was not quiet level,and the tank wasn't quiet emptying! When we got it home I opened up the closet above the toilet,and,man alive! I thought I'd fall out! You get the picture.

Always put some chemical in there,regardless! You never know what it's doing until later.If it sits long enough,say,we hadn't noticed it before parking it in a big hot tractor shed and going off for a while,well,I hate to think about it.Hard to ever remove that odor once it's been around a while.

HAHA!! Well...about that only thing I ever need to do at 2 AM is pee!

As you get closer to my age,that kind of thing can get pretty unpredictable.

I was reminded of something last summer that we saw.We were buying a used trailer from a gal that has a nice Kiefer dealership and that AM,some folks that she had loaned a nice,new Sidekick out to had brought it back.It was a NICE one,they'd bought several from her over the years,and for some reason,she had loaned them this one to stay in for a while on some rodeo or show circuit trip.

we went out to look it over.When we stepped in it,the instant we did,we came back out of it in a hurry.Apparently they'd brought it back w/out dumping their black tank.!! Either that,or they didn't add any chemical to the tank.It was obvious what the smell was.I imagine that dealer nearly fell out when she found it out! That is a hard smell to ever get rid of,especially in July in Arkansas!!!

I bet she didn't loan them anything, anymore.

Well I don't think I would have,but,like I say,they were supposedly GOOD customers,and she's a small dealer,so,I guess you do what you have to do.

I've been using the 5-gal bucket with the trash bag of sawdust, b/c that way I can just double-bag the contents and bring it to the town dump with the rest of the trash.  Are y'all saying that if I had a chemical toilet I could just dump the contents in my house toilet?  I'm not on town sewer/water... are the chemicals safe for septic tanks?

I know it's nigh impossible to stick to this advise,with a septic tank,and a modern day home that uses laundry detergents,dishwasher,dish detergent,cleaners,ect.

But I have to laugh when I remember an older plumber that I met years ago when I was first married.He did some work on our first home.He said,"Lady,there's only 3 things that need to go in that tank.S,P,and A-wipe!" I think of "Mr.J.C." every time I'm talking about a septic system with anybody,and I laugh!

At our old place in Tx the only thing plumbed to the septic tank were the toilets.  Everything else was run out to the pasture.  We had two nice green spots all summer.  The washer and dryer were in the detatched garage so had their own "pipes".  I used that one to water the yard/garden.

Not only was it legal in that area but it was encouraged because it is so dry there.
