My sons gelding is always a great horse has never bucked or hopped. My son jumps on him in the pasture and rides him with a halter and the horse loves it always comes right up to him. Until two days ago....we went on a trail ride and I could tell the horse had an edge to him and sure enough he crow hopped a time or two. When we got home I noticed he was holding his ears out like an airplane, then lastnight my son jumped on him in the pasture and he outright bucked. I brought him in and looked in his ears they aren't gunky but there is some brown wax. I doctored for mites and he still is the same today....I know something is wrong but I am not sure what to do. I don't think there is an emergency and will get him to the vet on Monday....just thought you all might hae some ideas....he also knocked the medicine out of my hand so I don't have anything for his ears now....

A tick in the horse's ear was the first thing I thought it might be.  I would definitely have a vet out to take a look.

Saw the vet today and he could not find one thing wrong with this horse, except he has a few spurs on his teeth. They sedated him and floated teeth good and looked all in his ear and found no mites or anything. My favorite vet was out on a farm call but his guy is okay and I had to work and hubby took him in to our vet and he said they looked him over good and could not find one thing. He said if he continues to act like this we will try again....

Not that I wanted something to be wrong but I was afraid of this. My neighbor is an old man that everyone swears is a horse whisper and is great with horses lots of folks around here think he is better than most vets. I am hoing to get him over one day this week.

Wyatt is still holding his ears kinda funny..He is sensitive about his hair blowing in his ears. I trimmed them up good a few days ago and I had let his bridle path grow out. I am going to trim it and see if it helps. It is just really bothering me.

Only other thing I can think of is a few weeks ago the kids rode for miles on the back roads and he just doesn't want to be road like that again. But he seemed to love it and was not sore after that I checked on him. My sons wants to work the daylights out of him but I asked him to give him a few days and let see....

I guess we are going to have to wait a few more days to see what is up...

OMG, I feel so stupid, I may have figured all this out. Tonight hubby and I sat down and outline what has been going on with this horse and it all started after I changed his feed. Went to a feed store that bags their own and got a crappy sweet based feed. I didn't really like the feed but didn't want to throw it out. Then to top it off put this big mineral tub this in there with more molasses...This horse has never ate sweet feed except in the dead of winter and only one bag to three bags of pellets....I am going back to his pellets I don't care what the cost is.....I hope this is the problem....I know sweet feed can really change some horses and not others....

Has he done this again since his teeth were floated? The sharp edges may have had a lot to do with it. I would go back to the usual feed as well. If they are doing well on something I would't change it. I hope all of that gets him back to himself for you.
