I was contacted today by someone who needs a horse hauled. This is not something I normally do, but would like to help these people out if possible. With all the cost increases lately, what would be a reasonable rate? What are trainers charging these days?

If I help out a friend I tell them to buy gas and MY dinner, for other people I call the trailer people at the other barn and help get the horse on trailer the liability is to height

cutter99, I wouldn't do it for no less that $1.00 a mile, or $2.00 a loaded mile. If you got to drive 50 miles empty, then pick up the horse and haul it 10 miles... Well, then you got to charge loaded and empty....And that would be for someone with a horse that I know. For a stranger with a horse that I don't know....Ain't apt to happen. Unless that person is in an ambulance on their way to the hospital or the morgue.

cutter- If I haul a good friends horse, they are with me and in charge of loading and unloading their own horse. I usually know the horse too, so I'm not to worried. Otherwise if I don't know them and know them and the horse well, an echo to the phrase... NO WAY, NO HOW, NOT TODAY, NOT TOMORROW, NOT ANYTIME!!!

I did not agree to do it. When I spoke to the owners, whom I had never met, they basically wanted to borrow a trailer for free!!! I explained to them I would never loan out a $25K trailer to anyone! They seemed to think this was strange...

Cutter99 ... These are definitely clueless people you don't want to get entangled with...
At the very best of circumstances, you'll get a trailer back... full of horse squeeze. Anyone else would clean it before returning it.
