I am looking at buying a used trailer and I was wondering if there was a place to find the serial numbers of all stolen trailers to make sure I don't pay a lot of money for a trailer that is stolen.  Anybody know the best way to check that?

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

Also  check with the manufacturer of the trailer.  If my trailer was stolen, I'd report it to the manufacturer in case it was brought in for service or something.

That's one I hadn't thought of. Thanks.

When I contacted the manufacturer of my trailer to transfer the warranty, they were able to tell me who was the original selling dealer and name of the purchaser.  If I had a reason, I could have traced the trailer's chain of owners back to myself.

If you have any doubts of the trailer's title, The rightful owner will be glad to hear from you.  And you will be too!! IF you called, before handing over a check.

When I bought mine it had a certificate of title showing owner's name, VIN, liens, etc.. I thought this was the norm. No?

Not to hijack the thread, but what are the best security measures for a GN? Lock the coupler and take the jack handle? Or would wheel locks be better?

Yes, titles are the norm, but have read where cars and trailers can have falsified titles...not sure how they do it.  I'm probably just being overly cautious, I still believe that 99 percent of all people have great intentions. Especially people who own or are around horses. I'm not sure about the rest of you, but the part I liked the most about my daughter being in equine activities is those were the kids I liked her being around the most. As a general rule I didn't feel like I had to worry too much when hanging around those friends. I am thinking that those kids were like that mostly because of their parents. Just good people.

As for security...good question and one I would like to know as well so you are not hijacking. I can write what I know about this subject on a postage stamp. I am here to try and learn from the experts. I think the ounce of prevention rule applies very well here. I am hoping the more I learn here, the fewer mistakes I'll make.  We'll see if that holds true.

Well as a vehicle theft investgator here in iowa, you may be able to call your state patrol or your local sheriff's office, ask for someone who specializes in the identifaction of vehicles, or a vehicle theft section.

I use the manufacturer quite often BUT like many manufacturers many trailers do not put on secondary (Police VINs), they just attach the public VIN plate. It may be able to be ID'd by the axle #. IF the manufacturer will give you the area of the secondary VIN it will take alot of scrubbing if you find it.

Yes, car thieves make counterfiet titles, they also steal vehicles and clone them, with like vehicles they buy in a junk yard. You ever find another vehicle with your VIN, same make, model, color???? They are out there.
