How hard is it to remove the industrial carpet that comes in the DR from the factory? I am wanting to put a linoleum floor down for a LQ and was wondering how hard a task this could be(removing the existing carpet)?

Thanks!

It all depends on the method used to keep the carpet in place.  I have read on this site that some people were able to just pull it up and then use it for a template to cut the new flooring.  On my silverstar, the carpet was glued to the aluminum floor with some kind of industrial strength gorilla glue.  My hubby used a heat gun to soften the glue and a winch clamped to the carpet to pull it out as he applied the heat!!!  Then it took 3 cans of lacquer thinner to clean the residual glue off the surface of the floor, bulkhead wall and bed.

Good Luck...

Have you considered a laminate type (Pergo) flooring?  You can go right over the carpet if you go this route.  I did it in ours and we couldn't be happier.  Lots easier to sweep than it is to vacuum.

I am considering a laminate floor, but wanted to install insulation and needed to put in stringers to support the plywood over the insulation. I didn't want to put anything over the carpet in case it somehow got wet and leaked onto the carpet.  I thought I'd be risking the possibility of mold growth.

Hank,

How is the Pergo floor holding up? Does it expand and contract? I wanted to do the same thing but worried about the moister factor. How did you finish off the floor around the walls? Did you install the under layment for the floor as well? Thanks for your help!

Yes, it's holding up wonderfully after two years.  And we've had our share of wet and sloppy boots on it.

As far as expansion, I left the recommended 1/4"-3/8" gap around the perimeter, then used pine 1" x 4"'s as base trim - attached to the walls.  You gotta let that flooring have the ability to move, or it'll buckle.  Installation over industrial level-loop needs no underlayment, per the instructions.  Before putting it down I laid 4 mil. visqueen and duct taped any seams.

We sure like it.  I found this stuff on clearance at one of the home fix-it stores for less than $1/sq. ft.  I've got maybe $50 in materials, and it took about three hours total.
