Every time I see my friend pulling her trailer- I think my gosh- her axles are almost dragging the ground. She has a REAL old 2 horse bumper pull. Unknown maker. Been repainted a few times- I think its from the late 60's. Any way- I think the suspension is called shakle bolt. Should the axles be only 3 or 4 inches off the pavement?

That depends on how the trailer was made.  If she is concerned she could take it to any dealer and they could check to make sure the axels are on right and not bent.

If I remember right, on my old 197? WW the axels were only about 6 inches or so off the ground.   I think it had 15 inch tires on it.

Thank you so much for the reply Terri!

I feel a little bit better now- but that little trailer of hers is so old- it just scares me so.

She says she got the wheel bearings packed last spring and if there was something wrong with the suspension- would nt they have said something?

I said- well, maybe- maybe not- it would depend if the person doing the work was observant. or cared- what if he was having a bad day. Did you ask them if the suspension and axles were ok?

She is just assuming its fine. and it just scares the crap out of me to drive behind her.

I also think the trailer sways some side to side if she goes over a certain speed limit.

Old doesn't mean bad.  And most bumper pulls will sway a bit.  That's why they have the "sway bars" on a lot of trailers now.

I don't think the suspension has anything to do with axel height.   I *think* most suspension is above the axel.  At most it would affect the height of the trailer floor.

As long as she is confident her trailer is in good shape I wouldn't worry about it.
