It's 2 lane with just a short stretch of 4 lane just outside of Wichita. It's pretty good runnin' and you'll see some of the nicest country the Good Lord has ever made! If you have time, stop in to the Wizard of Oz meuseum in Liberal KS. lol Talk to y'all later...

Hi...shoot, I won't have time to stop. As I am moving from the Twin Cites, and just driving through. I was going to take Hwy 35 all the way down to I-40, then hit that across into CA. BUT...Mapquest has me going on US-54. Odd.
It does save me 100 miles, but I wonder how much time it will add, if the traffic is slower on US 54? But you did mention that it's good running. So it may be okay. THANKS!

54 goes to 4 lane for a ways around Hutchinson also. But the traffic is less and it's a good road. I took it to Albuqurque a few years back and there is a lot less traffic to deal with. If you're hauling livestock, you might appreciate fewer semis fighting for "your" space.

Down around OKC they had alot of severe flooding lately. I had some truck drivers tell me at work last weekend that hwy 40 was shut down in some places outside of OKC. Im sure it's open now but it may not be too pretty (scenic) and they might have some tore up roads. dunno.

US HWY 54 does not go thru Hutchison, that is Hwy 50. I just came back from Colorado and 54 isn't too bad. Face it, there aren't many GOOD roads in western Kansas.

My bad-'re right. However, I really DID take 54 to Albuquerque and found it to be a shorter trip that way than taking interstate. Despite the speed limit difference, went down through OKC and back via 54. MUCH preferred 54.

HWy 54 runs thru El Dorado and across thru the sourthern half of KS, Dodge City, and Garden City, I then beleive 54 takes you on into NMexico by Tucamari (SP?)........ Depends on the time of day that you travel w/ traffic. Most of it is 2 lane HWY.

Just to let you know, I live in Andover, which is bascially Wichita & there is MAJOR construction from Andover rd. up past Rock rd. & if you are passing during traffic hours you will be at a full stop for a LONG time & it is in the upper 90s here right now... if you can pass during afternoon hours you should be good, otherwise you may want to take a detour. PM me if you need suggestions on detours from this area.
