Planning to go to Hungry Horse East in Va. last of Sept. I've been there to check it out and was very impressed..(It's about 5 miles down from Iron Horse Camp) Anyone been lately?

Yes, it is the same as years ago except new owners and more expensive, too expensive for us.  Iron Mountain offers better options and costs much less.

ghbb41, what are some of the other options that Iron Mtn. has? (Being so close together, looks as though both camps use the same trail systems.) Appreciate your input!

I called Iron Mountain and was told they no longer do primitive camping (we have a tent - no trailer with LQ yet). After speaking with the owner, she said that she would allow us to come, but she was still going to charge $20 per night for placing a tent there. To be honest, I really didn't like her attitude, so decided to go back to Fort Valley in two weeks instead. We were there Labor Day weekend and loved it, so we're going back for a week on the 15th. They only charge $12 a night for the campsite and, since we're staying an entire week, we get a discount for both the campsite and the corral for the horses. I really didn't appreciate being made to feel like a "second class citizen" when I called Iron Mountain. JMHO...

Hi TrishC! Where is Fort Valley in relation to Iron Mtn. I would get off at the Galax exit coming up on I-77 from S.C. if going to Iron Mtn. and Hungry Horse. Isn't it further north and if so, about how far ?Thanks.

Fort Valley is on I-81 south of Winchester or on I-66 near Front Royal. It's much further north than you have to come for the others, but my husband and I really enjoy it there. Hope this helps :)
