I want to make sure I'm getting what I'm paying for....is there a way to run a Vin # check on a trailer like I can on a vehicle to see if it's been in an accident?

You could try CarFax.
You can probably get it for FREE if you are financing the trailer, since the lending institution will want to know it's history anyway.
