History of the Kentucky Derby

The first Kentucky Derby was held on May 17, 1875, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky and is the oldest consecutively held thoroughbred race in America. The first jewel of the Triple Crown, which includes the Belmont Stakes and the Preakness Stakes, the Kentucky Derby is a high stakes race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses. The fastest Kentucky Derby was run by Secretariat, who covered the 1 1/4 miles in 1:59 2/5.

Known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" for the approximate amount of time it takes all horses to cross the finish line, the Kentucky Derby is now held annually on the first Saturday in May and draws close to 155,000 hat wearing, mint julep drinking, fried chicken eating horse racing fans to its legendary stands and infield.

Triple Crown History
TRIPLE CROWN: The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont stakes.

In the more-than-126-year history of the U.S. events, only eleven horses have ever won the U.S. Triple Crown:

1919 Sir Barton
1930 Gallant Fox
1935 Omaha
1937 War Admiral
1941 Whirlaway
1943 Count Fleet
1946 Assault
1948 Citation
1973 Secretariat
1977 Seattle Slew
1978 Affirmed

No horse has swept the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont since Affirmed in 1978.
Six in the last ten years have failed even after winning the first two.

It has been 29 years.............................................................

MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME
By Stephen Foster

The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home,
Tis summer, the people are gay;
The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom
While the birds make music all the day.

The young folks roll on the little cabin floor
All merry, all happy and bright;
By'n by hard times comes a knocking at the door
Then my old Kentucky home, Good-night!

Weep no more my lady. Oh! Weep no more today!
We will sing one song for my old Kentucky home
For the old Kentucky home, far away.

TRIPLE CROWN DRINKS:
__________________________________________

Kentucky Derby Mint Julep

Traditional drink of Kentucky and the Kentucky Derby. It has been served for hundreds of years to help cool down the hot Kentucky summers and is now served by the thousands on Kentucky Derby day at Churchill Downs.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • fresh mint
  • Crushed ice
  • Kentucky Bourbon

PREPARATION:

Prepare mint syrup by boiling sugar and water together for 5 minutes. After it cools, pour it over 6-8 sprigs of mint (bruised slightly to release the taste) and refrigerate overnight in a covered container.
__________________________________________

Black-Eyed Susan

Traditional drink of the Preakness. This is how it is served at the Alibi Breakfast at Pimlico and also to the fans at the Black-Eyed Susan and Preakness Stakes. Be careful as it is deceptively strong!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 part Cointreau
  • 1 part Mount Gay rum
  • 1 part Vodka
  • Pineapple Juice
  • Orange Juice

PREPARATION:

Fill a highball glass with shaved ice, add the liquors first, then top off with equal parts of orange and pineapple juice. Stir and garnish with a lime wedge.
__________________________________________

Belmont Breeze

The traditional drink of the Belmont Stakes since 1998. The previous drink was the White Carnation. This is the most expensive of the Triple Crown drinks at $10 a glass so you might want to try this one at home.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 1/2 oz. Seagrams 7
  • 3/4 oz. Harveys Bristol Cream Sherry
  • 1/2 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1 oz. Simple Syrup
  • (you may substitute 1 oz. of Sweet & Sour mix for the lemon juice and simple syrup)
  • 1 1/2 oz. Fresh Orange juice
  • 1 1/2 oz. Cranberry juice
  • 1 oz. 7-Up
  • 1 oz. of soda
  • fresh strawberry
  • lemon wedge

PREPARATION:

Shake first 6 ingredients with ice and top with half 7up and half soda, approximately one ounce of each. Garnish with fresh strawberry and a mint sprig and a lemon wedge.
__________________________________________

White Carnation

The traditional drink of the Belmont, as served until 1997. It was replaced in 1998 by the Belmont Breeze.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 oz. Vodka
  • 1/2 oz. Peach Schnapps
  • 2 oz. Orange Juice
  • Soda
  • Splash of Cream
  • Crushed ice

PREPARATION:

Stir liquors and soda together and pour over ice in a highball glass. Splash cream over top then garnish with an orange slice.

I don't know who I favor, but on www.bloodhorse.com they're talking about Hard Spun burning up the track with "all but sparks" on his feet for his work out this morning.

Putting my dime on "Curlin", he blistered the field at the Arkansas Derby by 10 1/2 lengths. Ran in third place until the far end of the track, he never layed his ears back nor did the jockey ever put the whip on him, rounding the fourth turn, he just walked away from the field. He ran like it was effortless. Horse seems solid, they didn't run him as a 2yo, so maybe he'll be a pretty good 3yo, not all broken down before the race begins. The horse is three for three, so he looks pretty good to me.

We need the Official Field and Post positions.
I think we'll see a 20 horse field this year.

Date: 5-2-2007 the Post positions will be picked later today.

Curlin is my favorite also. He had an impressive win in the Arkansas Derby and still had alot of life left in him.

Actually they have only drawn the order of selecting the post positions - the actual post position draw starts at 5 pm.

Surprisingly there have been quite a few winners from the far outside posts, so many in fact that it's not really considered all that bad a place to be.  Several years ago, Neil Drysdale selected (post 15) for Fushaichi Pegasus since he was a nervous horse.  He won the Derby with ease.  Other winners from outside posts have included the following: '04 Smarty Jones #13, Monarchos #16, Charismatic #16, Grindstone #15, and Thunder Gulch #16

I went to the Derby in '82 and '88 and sat in the infield with 100,000 plus people - it was quite a party and experience to behold....

Kentucky Derby Fast Facts

In the past 30 years or so, only one favorite has won it. It was Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000, who was owned by a Japanese businessman. Favorites have won 50 times in 132 races (38 per cent).

The winningest post position is #2 with 29 winners. Twelve winners won from post #1, and ten winners each from posts #4 and #5. None have won from post #15. More........................... http://horseracing.about.com/library/weekly/aa042101a.htm
