Would like to know people's experiences with the slide outs in the trailers. We are looking at a new trailer and are having a hard time in deciding to go with 8'wide and no slide or 8'wide with a slide. Do slides require much maintenance to keep them working properly? Thank you, Sheila

They don't if you get the right set up. Do not buy a an electric slide out with gears. The gears can break and often times are hard to work in the cold weather. In addition, very little weight can be in the slide out when you push it out or pull it in.
Get one that is hydraulic. It will not break and you can have a sofa full of people in the slide and still push it out or pull it in.

There is no comparison with or w/o a slide out. All the extra room is in the floor space, aisleway if you will. With our Bison with a slide out, we had six adults sitting inside our trailer for supper on a cold night. Two "bag" chairs sitting in the aisle, three people on the couch and I was sitting on the boot box. Try that in a non-slide trailer.
Ours has a couch. some have a dinette. The slide does add considerable weight to the trailer. Apparently, that's due to the structural steel needed to support it.

My Trails West has a slide out dinette, We have had no problems with it at all and I use my trailer all the time. For us the choice was simple, we had to get a 7 foot wide trailer because we haul portable pens, it gets too wide on the side of an 8 foot whan hauling panels. So keep that in mind if you want to haul pannels on your trailer. But if you dont, get as much space as you can afford. I dint think I have ever heard anyone say "I just have too much space in here"

Thank you for your reply...I noticed you mentioned you had a Bison trailer. That is one of the brands we are considering. Have you experienced any problems and do the Bison trailers pull well?

Hi SGabby, there is no comparison with the slide out. They are great. Mine is electric and so far (going on 4 years) I've had no problem with it. I'm sure the motor will eventually need to be replaced but it's pretty easy to get to and shouldn't be very expensive. I also have a Bison and have been very happy with mine. Got it from Randy Burmaster in Fletcher NC. Great guy. feel free to pm if you have questions.
