It takes about 4000 more calories per day above maintenance for a horse to add one pound of body weight per day. Most hay has around to 800-900 calories/pound. You would have to feed an extra 5 pound of hay to achieve that extra one pound of body weight per day. Say you are feeding Purina Ultium, Strategy, or Omolene 200, it would require 2-2.5 pounds extra to achieve that one pound of body weight per day. You want your horse to gain 50 pounds, so now you are feeding your horse enough to gain one pound of body weight per day, it will take 50 days to achieve 50 pounds. Now it is cold, for every 10 degrees below "criticial temperture" it will requrie 15- 20% more just for maintenance. What does maintenance mean, the amount of feed requried to maintain your horse's current weight.

hconley, I really appreciate the fact that you take the time to share some really good info and share it in a way that makes it pretty easy to understand as well.
I hope the ice storms in your area have not left too much damage, but it looks like you are going to get it again this weekend from the weather maps? Keep in touch and let us know how you are fairing this winter with all the bad weather.
