Hi!

We have been looking around for a while to find a stock trailer with large (8'-10') LQs for $25K or less and have been unsuccessful.

We have seen a nice Cherokee 2005 which looked perfect for 30K at a dealership. BUT: It is built real light (4800 axles) and they seemed to have already tried to fix the seams on the roof by putting silicon or something on it.

And I think it has never been used!

It has a generator and some nice 10' LQs but the overall structure seems to be rather week.

What do you guys think about this trailer?

Now we are wondering if we wouldn't be better off with buying a used stocktrailer and have LQs put in later.

We would like to have full LQs with a seperate shower and toilet, fridge, sink, cookstove and a dinette.

I have already checked out Bunkhouse and it seems as if it costs about 13k-14k for what we want(?)

Which seems a lot to me!

It doesn't need to be very fancy for us. We mainly need everything to work.

Do you know any other conversion companies in East Texas and can you give me an idea of what their prices are.

Is it a good idea to do all this yourself? How does that turn out money wise?

Thank you!

Buy used.Look and look some more and be willing to drive a few states in any direction to get one.Lots of trailers out there. To me lots of good buys as winter hit.I looked into new.New bare and having LQ done after purchase etc.The used trailers were every where in every shape, size, options etc.with the original owner taking the big hit in loss valve.Ask for photos of any part of a used trailer you want to look at.

thanks!

you are probably right.

I'm just impatient because I want something pretty quick.

And I have found our dreamtrailer (used) 1400 miles away, but thats just too far.

Although, do you have any ideas about reasonable shipping companies?

I know of a guy that does LQ not too far from you that I think could give you an estimate (PM me and I can give you a name and location, don't know his #), he's just north of Canton on FM 17. I'm just SW of Canton BTW, went through this same thing last spring when I was getting a new trailer. Bunkhouse isn't the cheapest conversion company around either but that doesn't seem too high depending on what all you want, for mine Bunkhouse would have been $22K. I wouldn't get a trailer with anything less that 7K axles if it's got 10' LQ and is 3-4 horse...... that's more than enough but it's better to be too strong than not strong enough. If you found what you want 1400 miles away and the price is right I would get it.

I can tell you that my REPLACEMENT LQ for my 11ft longwall was $8900 without Fridge, Micro, sink, or toilet which didn't need replacing. They did install a shower in that price though.

I think you're better off looking for a good used trailer rather than a stock trailer and adding a LQ...that gets expensive.

Letting dealers know what you're looking for helps...they get trades all the time. Some dealers might even deliver within a certain distance.

I found mine on this site but it was also on Equine.com. I live near Athens Ga.(UGA) and bought our trailer in Tampa Fla. Their all over.At dealers and by owners in all differant price ranges. We didn't pay a very much more then what the LQ cost back in 98.

I WOULD DOUBLE CHECK THE AXLE RATING ON THE TRAILER YOU LOOKED AT.I'M SURE CHEROKEE DOESNT USE THAT SIZE OF AN AXLE ON THERE TRAILERS THAT SIZE.GET THE VIN# AND GIVE CHEROKEE A CALL I'M SURE THEY WOULD BE GLAD TO GIVE YOU THE SPECS ON THIS TRAILER

Thanks to all of you for your advice!

To give Cherokee some credit: The axles were rated 7k, there was a mistake with the sticker. Still yet, the framework underneath it looked much less solid than similar trailers made by Sooner.

Since we haven't found what we really wanted yet, we are now looking to buy an aluminum 96' exciss GN horse trailer because it seems to be a good deal and we could use it until we find our perfect trailer.

Maybe I could tab your knowledge again: it was originally a 4 horse trailer and they converted it into a 3 horse with 9ft LQs.

Its an owner conversion with ac, toilet, shower, fridge, sofa, paneling, microwave, sink and lots of cabinets. The LQs are only 2 years old and look nice, clean, and professional BUT everything is electric only.

They agreed on 15K which seems (too?) good. What do you think?

Are there any known problems with that kind of trailer; what do we need to look for when we check it out in person?

Thanks!
