Hey all!! Hope everyone had a Merry Chirstmas and will have a safe New Year. May God bless and keep us all safe for the year to come. I do have a question for everyone also. I have the insulation, the paneling, the carpet in the nose. Now it is time for cabinets. I have gotten a local cabinet maker to give me an estimate for my 4 ft. short wall trailer. It was 1700.00. and I just about fell through my underware. I asked for a shelf on either side of the boot box. Cabinets with countertop under the window that would house the sink, and the fridge. Cabinets on top of the window and along side of the window. Does this seem outrageous to anyone else. Thanks for everyones input.

Hi Amos,

Custom-built cabinets are by far the most expensive.  Consider ordering off-the-shelf cabinets from Home Depot or other big-box retailer, or working with a semi-custom cabinet company.   Countertops are a separate component from the cabinets.   My husband is a finish carpenter and installs cabinets for a living.

You could build your own cabinet frames out of 1inch plywood and buy or build doors and a counter top.  That's what we did in our last house when the estimate for new cabinets in our 8x10 kitchen was almost $10,000.  We built all the frames, doors (husband just got a new router and had to try it out) and then went to lowes and bought the counter tops.

Hi Amos,

I agree with Headhunter, custom cabinets are expensive, and I actually don't think that price is too bad.  It depends on what kind of wood of course, but even a fairly common wood like red oak is not cheap and it takes a lot of labor hours to make cabinets.  My husband makes furniture for a hobby and made a cabinet for our 4' short wall trailer out of oak, it has a boot box, wardrobe, 4 shelves and 2 drawers.  I don't remember what the wood cost, but it took a lot of time to make.

Pre-made cabinets would probably be a much less expensive way to go. :

Beth

Hi Amos,

I just built our cabinets right into the wall. Made my own doors and everything. Wish I had a router, I might of made them a bit fancy if I had one. I wanted our cabinets to match the walls and not look like they were just "put in". Turfa has a good site about the cabinets he made for his trailer. Did a darn good job too!

I built my own frames and purchased doors from an internet site that has seconds.

http://home.earthlink.net/~dheismann/  The door site is http://stores.ebay.com/DOORSANDPULLS_W0QQssPageNameZl2QQtZkm

The frames were not difficult and I used oak faced plywood for most of the large panels and scrap wood in the area's that would not show when installed.  The edges of the plywood got covered with iron on vaneer from Home Depot.  I made the drawer fronts, but I could have purchased them at the door site also.

Man Turfa YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!Your trailer looks awesome, you have done a wonderful job on your trailer. Must have a lot of hours in it.

Maccwall- I used a lot of your information that you have posted on how to start and finish my trailer. Thank you so much for the taking the time to take all of the pictures and post all of the steps and all of the detail that you did. Your post have been very informational and helpful. Thank you again.

Terri- For $10000.00 in that size space, I would have melted into my shoes and they would still be putting me back together.

Headhunter- I had never thought about semi-custom cabinets Thanks for the tip

Roperchick- You sure are lucky to have someone who does woodworking-especially on this topic

Thank you all again for all of your input, you have all been very helpful and I sure do appreciate you all. Again hope everyone has a Happy and SAFE New Year.

I use "In Stock" cabinets from Home Depot they will cost about $40 a foot or so. I have all the tools, Shaper, Router, Kleg System to make my own where I have to. But for the cost of the Home Depot ones I won't make a cabinet unless I have to. I also take the standard 24" deep cabinets and cut them down to 21" Every inch counts in a LQ. You can take 3" out of the back and still use the drawers. http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/forum/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?...

I just bought cabinets that were at home depot and/or menards.  The vanity I bought already stained.  Got it from the bathroom dept in menards.  I got the counter top from menards in the remant area.  The cabinet in the nose and the cabinet above the sink I got at home depot unfinished.  I brought it home and stained them.  The doors on them are oak.  Costs of this was I think around 200.00 or so.

Just cut the backs out of them and attach to the walls.

I have done several horse trailer cabinets local and out of state. I can't find the darn pictures, so here are some of my kitchen cabinets. They are built out of Barnwood. Great Look and every one will be envious.

Splinters- Your kitchen is so cool!!!!!!!! Where did you find the barnwood to do your cabinets? There are several barns in my area that are about to cave in and I have asked a couple of them if I could have or buy the wood and they have denied me due to the liability. What a downer. But your cabinets look just fab

Dunreiner- You got a heck of a deal. I wish I could get all of my cabinets for under $300.00. I would feel like I hit the jack pot
