I'm still truck shopping, found a FL60 with new engine that's a cummins 5.9 190hp. It's a 6 speed. with sleeper. is that going to be enough to pull my CM 2002 4horse LQ loaded with horses, water, hay rack full all the usuals?
Its a good price ( I think) but if it's not enough power it'll really be a pain.
I'm told this is the same engine thats in dodge 1Ton trucks. so with extra wind resistance am I going to be under powered?

Did or can you get the torque rating on that engine in the FL60.Some of the B59s have differant torque ratings then the ones used in the Dodge trucks I believe. What gear ratio(differantial)and what trans is used?

Well with that trans/gear and considering that that engine is the optional engine in the Ford 650s I bet it would be could to go.Call Cummins.Do a web search. They have a question/answer line.

That 190 horse 5.9 is a reliable engine but you better leave a little early because it may be a little slow. I don't believe the torque is much over 400'#'s. When you hit the hills it's gonna get real slow. High idle on that engine is somewhere in the 2400 rpm range, so it ain't going to get out there and roll along at 75 mph pulling your trailer. It will pull right along with a good running Chevrolet 454. What year model is this truck? Does this engine have a mechanical fuel injection pump (old 12 valve engine) or is it the 24 valve, electronic setup?

Being fast and having the torque to pull is two differant things.Cats in the mid dutys is not very quick to get things moving. 1900 to 2100 is right in the engines peak rpm area. There is a formula for figuring out torque, gearing, rear axel to know what it is capable of.GOOD medium duty/big truck salesman have charts to figure it out.

Hi, sounds like a good solid ole hauler to me,obviously its not going to have the performance of the latest generation of trucks but 15 years ago would have been considered good..speed costs, how fast you want to go???

Don't bother yourself with torque numbers and axle ratios, they're not well understood by many of the people who ask about them. Horse power is the rate at which an engine can do work, it is the only thing you need to know to figure out how fast a given engine can pull a given load up a given grade againt a given headwind - with some assumptions about frontal area, aerodynamic coefficients, etc. Axle ratio is meaningless without knowledge of tire size, you can always cog down on the significant climbs.
"enough" is subjective. If you expect (as some do) to "not even know the trailer is back there" fergettit. ergo a loaded truck is a loaded truck.

Sounds like a good truck. The 5.9 cummins is the ame one in all Dodge trucks, so as you can see you can get more HP out of it. Here in Co we have Colorado Kenworth. Find a place like that and they will be able to turn it up for you. On the older Mechanical engines like yours, it usually consists of backing out some set screws and resetting them. Sounds to easy, but it works.

If its a piton pump truck a fueling plate and maybe a turbo housing and it will make a good amount more umph.H.P. is nice but TORQUE is what pulls.A bigrig truck saleman can very easily do the math on gear, engine, tires size and give you its limints. They have to do it all day to outfit the truck specs for the job intended and its max capiabilty.Visit a Freightliner or Mack store with those specs and ask! They will know better then then the lite duty truck sites.

since someplace to ASK someone that knows is at least 500 miles away.
I've called a couple of local businsess that have trucks like this and i'm going to look at theirs and see is someone will let me pull by trailer down the road and up a few hills to see how it handles it.

The engines that are in Ford/Freightliners (what we called them) are not the exact engine that Chrysler puts in the Dodge trucks. I work in the plant that builds the engines that go into the Dodge trucks (they are in both the 3/4T and Ton). We used to build a engine that went into Ford/Freightliner trucks. There are different componets that went on each kind.
