yes my question was,    does anyone have a conditioner or cleaner they use on their saddles and other tack. also water proofing, something good for that. and all that without ruining the leather. i have always used neatsfoot oil.  i would like to use something that works well with less oil excess left over.    thanks! cj

I took a "class" on tack cleaning from an old saddle maker.  I do what he suggested:  clean leather with Murphy's Oil Soap, then apply 100% Neatsfoot Oil until soaked in, let dry then apply Fiebing's harness dressing, which will waterproof and shine the leather.  Works for me!

I use Ko-Cho-Line about twice/yr...really slop it on (it's red and gooey)...let it sit at least 24 hrs, then wipe the leftovers off with a clean, soft cloth. I love this stuff! It even makes my dry, cracked, yucky, horsey hands soft! In between, I use light coats of 100% Neatsfoot oil, wiping them off almost immediately.

hello,  comment of saddle cleaning and conditioning.  I used every soap and cleaner out there and I came down to one that has been the best for all my saddles.  It is called leather new.  It cleans, conditions and polishes at the same time.  I also like it because it lets your saddle breath.   Leather has pores and when you clog the pores you cause your saddle to hold in the dirt, sweat, and wetness (if you got caught in the rain).  If you don't clean your saddle it will rot your saddle from the inside out.  I have a saddle that is over 20 years old and leather new has preserve my leather.  Neatsfoot oil blocks the pores in the leather and therefor will hold all that dirt, sweat, and wetness and she will eventually rot from the inside out.  If my saddle gets really dirty or muddy  I will use a mild soap and wait until it is fully dried (24 hour) and then I will use my leather new.

I have heard the samething about Murphys Oil soap and have used it in the past. I have also read stuff about too much oil on saddle and tack. I like Absorbines products.

I use Murphy's oil soap mixed in water as recommended to clean all my leather tack.  After it is completely dry I rub in Fiebing's golden mink oil, actually I put on a lot.....enough that there is still a layer of extra oil on the surface.  Then I set all the tack out in the sun (in the summer) or by the heater in the house for several hours, this allows the oil to penetrate and really softens and conditions it.  Whatever oil has not penetrated in that time I wipe off and buff with a soft cloth.

If you have tack that is very dry and cracked you can repeat the process until it gets soft and there is oil left on the surface to wipe off.  This has worked for me for many years.
