Hi!
Anyone have any experience with automatic feeders?  I am hoping to buy some land and finally keep my horses at home.  Unfortunately, my job requires that I spend 1-2 nights away from home every other week.  Any recommendations on types, manufacters of feeders?
Thanks!

I've never used an auto feeder, but when we go out of town for a night or two I will just put out a few bales of hay(usually double what they would get if I was home so they don't eat it all the first day).  If its longer I will buy a round bale and have the neighbour come over and check for injuries and to make sure no one pulled the float out of the water trough.  A couple of days with out grain won't hurt them and will shre make them happy to see you when you get back.

Leave them extra hay like Terri suggests................don't waste your money.

We should start a thread on what equine/farm products people have purchased that were just a total waste of money.

Let me think.........oh I purchased the EZ-Up stirrup thing.  What a waste of money that was.

Thanks for the advice!!!  I've never kept my horse at home.  When I find a new home with land, it will be a whole new experience to wake up every day and see my buddies!!!

You just moved to Montana!   Cool.  Where did you move from?

You really get to bond with your horses when you have to take care of them on a daily basis.  I love it. Although, I've had to take on a boarder for the first time.  She get's free board for her horse and  in return she has to care for my herd when we go away..............great deal for both of us...........

Just moved to Helena from Indianapolis!  Long but beautiful trip with my horse to a new life!  I'd never been to Montana before, but it seems to be just what I was looking for... small town, large space, great people and lots of horse lovers!

I too have found that the best way, leave extra hay and or get a trusted person to watch and feed them ehile I am away.In return I do the same for them or let them ride my horses when they want to.WIN WIN situation!

I saw those Stable Grazers featured on RFD just recently.  Don't know what they cost but I bet its a lot!  I suppose if your horses were stalled all the time it would be good, but hopefully your horses are allowed to be outside the majority of the time, with a run-in of some kind.  We too put out extra hay.
