Trying to figure this out on my own on the NYS DMV website with no luck. On hold for 45 minutes...perhaps someone out there has some insight or experience.
Probably buying a new trailer located in New Hampshire. I live in New York State sales tax is 8.25% here.
1) Would I pay NH or NY sales tax?
2) Also - do the vehicle and trailer plates typically match?
3) Inspections - other surprise costs I should be aware of in advance?

I don't know anything about NY, but I live in Maryland and I registered my trailer in the state of Maine even though I purchased it in Maryland. Most people around here title their trailers in Maine because of the cheap cost of the tags alone. If NY allows you to, I'd be putting Maine tags on your trailer. Here's the phone number to the Maine Dept of Motor Vehicles. #207-623-4128. Call them, and they will tell you if other people from New York have registered their trailers in Maine. It's a heck of alot cheaper. A five year semi-permanent tag cost only $100.
Heck it's worth the call.
Oh and no inspection was required, or any type of sales tax etc. I sent the original title to them and they re-issued me a Maine title and tag in my name with my Maryland address. And by the way, anyone can do this as long as your state allows it. I am lucky that Maryland okay's it. Which I find hard to believe. Heck even if they didn't, I'd be putting on the Maine tag anyway. Another problem could be the company that is financing the trailer. They "sometimes" will frown upon you tagging your trailer in another state.

Called the number - thank you. What i learned is that the empty weight of the trailer needs to be over 3000 lbs for Maine to title it. BUT they CAN license it for me. 5 years at $75...

Glad that I could help you. Here in Maryland, if my memory is correct, it was costing us $180 a year just for our bumper pull! I wasn't about to put Maryland tags on the living qtrs too. I hadn't a clue what those tags would have cost us. For the two trailers we now pay a total of $175 . (That's the five year semi permenant tags) AWESOME!!!!
North Dakota is pretty cheap. That's great. I can't imagine anyone paying out the nose for "trailer" tags when Maine can accomodate them for a heck of alot less.

Dang I wish I had known that. It was'nt so bad until Md decided that they were going to a 2 yr tag 9/1 and never gave you warning. So my yearly tag bill is 510 just on the 3 horse trailers. I also have a 5th wheel and a small trailer. May have to retitle a few. I remember a guy that I knew that had Maine plates on his LQ and he was a local cop, at the time I thought it was odd but never asked,,, Great Info though.

Mingiz: Go for it! It's not a big deal at all to re-title the trailers. The Maine MV are really nice folks and explain everything over the phone what you have to do. They actually ANSWER the phone there. It's truly well worth it.

Boy, I quess my bumper pull must weigh over 3,000 lbs empty. I really don't know how much it weighs to be honest. I don't recall them asking me that question, but maybe they did. Now my Lqtrs weighs plenty, so that wasn't a problem. Geesh, I'm trying to think now if they brought that question up. How much does your trailer weigh empty?
Don't know a thing about N.D. Maybe someone else can help you out on that.

In North Dakota, I guess I would call the state Central Office MVD 701-328-2725. I have found that the people in the branch offices don't know much more than what their computer tells them. If you tried a branch office, I would try Fargo at 701-282-5070

Be careful with going with maine plates, a friend of mine got jammed up and had to pay a fine and then had to register the trailer in NY they are getting more and more stirct with the maine tags, and I have herd a few aother about people with Maine Tags. And as far as tax you have to pay tax on where the vehicle,trailer is going to be registered. I don't think it is worth to go with the maine tags.

I live in NY and have had Maine tags on my trailers for years and I'm on the road every weekend and never stopped either in NY or the other states I travel to and from. I figure the money I save will more than pay for my fines, etc. My husband is a retired NYS trooper and he agrees that it is not "entirely" legall, but that all of Home Depo, Walmart, Lowes, etc. fleets are registered in Maine with Maine tags and I do believe that if NY wants to come after little old me, then I will insist that they get after the "big boys". In the same respect, I always make sure I have no lights out, everything ship-shape AND I have the trailer inspected every year here in NY. The Maine folks are tightening up also...IF you have LQ listed on your trailer title, then they will not register/license.

What's the reasoning for not tagging Living Qtrs? Maybe it's New York that won't allow lvg qtrs trailers to be tagged out of state. With the VIN number wouldn't they know if it was a lvg qtrs type trailer? When I talked to the Maine MV they told me they tag RV's all the time. Bottom line IMO: It's what your state will or will not allow.

Yes - of course they tag RV's in Maine, BUT not for the same (low, low) cost of tagging/registering trailers. IF the title says LQ then you can most certainly can tag/register in Maine, but you will pay the RV registration price, about the same as in NY so what would be the point? Allthough, when you buy a trailer and register it in Maine you do not pay NY SALES TAX, which on a say $15,000. trailer can get pretty darn expensive. And NY State cannot recoup those tax dollars because if you are stopped and MUST register in NY, well you already have a title and own your trailer so you cannot be forced to pay back sales tax.
