We are thinking about planning a trip to the Big Horn Mtns next summer. Does anyone know of places to camp and ride? We can do primitive if we need to and would like a place that would have enough trails for one to two weeks of riding preferably right out of camp. After we set up we don't like to move.

Spent a week in the Big Horns on a cattle ranch about 5 years ago.  What a truly magnificent area.  We stayed at the TX Ranch based in Lovell, but rode out of "cow camp" each day.  Can't tell you anything about independent camping, but you'll love the area.

Check out gafoxtrotters.com. for some great pics and info.

We rode for a week 2 years ago from Hunter Trailhead. Primitive camping, scenery fantastic. All the campgrounds and trailheads in the park itself are primitive. Difficult to find the trails for a first timer, but usually riders there you can group up with to get your bearings the first couple days. The Camp host at Hunter is great if they are still there.

We are going to Big Horns for first time this year and will be leaving from Twin Cities in Minnesota. I have made reservations at Elk Haven in Keystone, South Dakota for a few days for first part of trip and will then move on to the Big Horns. I have contacted a lodge in Burgess Junction that indicated they have electric and water and put you in the back of camp. You can ride out of there but will share some trails with ATV's until you go off trail. I am looking at maps now to see if this is the best option. They said $15/day for a site which is great if ATV's are too much to deal with. The people I have spoken with say the Burgess Junction (north end of Big Horns) is the best. Steep, long hill to go in and out but if your truck can handle rig and you save your brakes by not going too fast on the downhill a trip worth taking I'm told. We are going early July. Continue to post if you want me to let me know what else I find out.

They have RV elec/water but probably not sewer as they put you in the back. You have to set up your own corral or picket line and can do that in the trees so the horses have some shade/shelter. I forgot to ask the length of the sites and will call back to do that as my rig is long. If you call the and find out about site length you can let me know as well. Good luck.

Hi all. No recent activity on this post so I hope to bring it to the front again. I am leaving in June to go to Black Hills in SD and then on to Burgess Junction, WY. I would like to then go to Powell, WY then to Billings, MT before returning to Saint Paul, MN. Does anyone have advice on which roads to avoid due to curves, climbs, descents, etc? I have a 8' x 28' (on floor) trailer attached to Ram dually so I am 55.5' nose to tail going down the road. I really would appreciate ANY feedback I can get. Thanks.

Suggest you email Susan Shedd you can find her email address at gafoxtrotters.com. Bruce and Susan have a nice webpage with great pics of the Bighorns and they trailer there from the east coast every year. She should be able to give you some information.
We went out from Ohio 2 years ago and spend 1 week riding out of the Hunter Mesa trailhead. This is out of Buffalo. Fantastic riding. We had thunderstorms, hailstorms, 80 degree weather blue sky and ice in the water buckets and new snow on the mountains within 1 week over the 4th of July. I believe the route over the mountains that goes through Burgess Junction is pretty steep with a lot of switchbacks. Susan should know the best way. Marty

My husband and I along with another couple traveled to the Big Horns in '03.  We were in the southern portion of the Big Horns.  We stayed at Battle Park.  Below is a link to a map of the trailhead.  We were only there for 4 days but the riding could take you for weeks.  We rode to see bear traps built in the 1930's, a gentlemen there by the name of Gene Little, took us to the valley where the elk winter, there is a cabin that was built into the hill side.  The Cloud Peak Wildnerness is within a couple hours of riding.  Although Battle Park is primitive, there are bathrooms and two spring fed water tanks for the horses.  When we stayed there, there was no camping fee.  If you want more info, feel free to e-mail me.  Cant' wait to go back.

Hi . I traveled out to the Black Hills and Big Horn mtns of Wyoming in 2003. Wow, I surely am planning on going back. Custer S.D. is awesome.  Alot of great riding and stuff to do. I stayed at a mom and pop horse ranch kinda thing, TC Ranch in Custer. Tom and Jean are great. I will leave it at that. And we traveled to the Ten Sleep area of the Big Horns. Just great riding. Camp we stayed at was at 9250 ft above sea level. I can't say enough about our trip. Only, lol, that I am going to sign up for the buffalo round up again, which is held in the fall. I did not get picked last year. Any way, email me if  you want better info.

There are going to be some major changes so call ahead to the forest service for more info.  Debbie

Did you happen to meet either Bill Brazelton or Gene Little while you stayed at Battle Park?

Jim, we were lucky enough to meet both men. The forest service took down  Bill's camphost sign. He was not too happy about that and said he is going to stay until they run him off. Debbie
