Hello,

Can you tell me what the usual spacing is for the boards in a horse trailer?

Thanks in advance,

Willa

If you are planning to replace them I'd snug them up as tight as possible.
Within about a week you'll have gaps wide enough to pass credit cards through - and drain urine. A month or two later you'll be happy that you didn't include spaces.

I'm sure in advance that someone will tell us this is wrong but, the last floor I put in was on a flat bed gooseneck, I used a 16 penny nail(approx. 1/8 of an inch) to space the boards, That way water and small things can drain well, while nothing is going to get caught up in the crack.

OH! Thank you! I'm glad I asked. The floor we are replacing was badly deteriated and some of the gaps were at least an inch or more but we knew that was from the bad state of the boards. My husband was thinking 1/4 inch spacing but when we laid them out last night it looked like too much space.

We've made much progress on the trailer (see my first post at http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/forum/thread-view.asp?threadid=4596&posts=10

So far we have torn out all the old wood, replaced the sides with new plywood, the floor is nearly ready to be finshed (thanks to your answers about the spacing), the new wire is run to the lights but the new lights are not put in yet though. All in all is going much faster and easier then we expected. Thanks to this forum!!

I did take a pic of my "Floor" of my trailer, for another reason... but I am going to post it, sometimes seeing things help.  It is wood slated, 6 years old.  You can see the mats cover it, I always clean it out and make sure nothing sits overnight.  Personally I think that it is in VERY good condition.

I agree, make it as tight as possible, with our Deck at the house, we spaced them tight and within a few months, they shrunk a tiny bit.  Plan for that!

If you're using typical PT lumber or rough sawn Oak ...Place them tight against each other.  They will shrink.

If they don't .. you have a leak in your trailer LOL ..

Well, This was much easier thn we expected and we're finished! Got the new plywood on the walls as well as other stuffI'm going to post in my other thread. Just wanted to post a picture here of what the finished floor looks like.

Thanks for your help with the spacing!
