It's not to hard of a job to dump a port-a-potty. It comes down to cost, cost more to do a bathroom with the tanks, but the trailer will sell for more money when you go to sell it.

We bought ours at Walmart 4 years ago. Still works great. I can't comment on the dumping. My husband gets to do that job. If the camping facility does not have a place to dump it he just dumps it in our septic tank when we get home.

My best friend bought me a porta potty for my birthday. Wierd I know. But i have enjoyed it ( again wierd) I travel to shows by myself so capacity isn't a issue ( PS I do take advantage of bathrooms at fairgrounds). I just get home, find a nice spot in the field and let her go. I cannot compair it to a in- trailer bathroom since I never had one but I didn't want to deal with more plumbing tanks and water for the trailer. Overall I am happy with the arrangement.

Farmbabe,
That is a weird friend of yours!! ;)
Porta potty or not, having one in your trailer is awesome. Fairground or public restrooms can be just plain gross. And if you have kids, all the better for them to use the one in the trailer.
Mine is a flushable toilet in my trailer. As far as dumping it, it is no biggy as I have learned. I used the sewer hose one time and they are a pain to clean so now I have learned to just dump the crapper after every show/use into a 5 gallon bucket. Like Farmbabe mentioned about finding a place in a field is fine, just don't let the dogs find it. I dump mine in our manure spreader.
When you need to clean the tanks, I run some bleach and water through it until the stuff coming out starts to look like water. There are also tablets you can put in the tank by flushing through the toilet. They keep things smelling good and help to break down the waste. You can find those at Walmart in the camping section.

If you will b staying in the trailer for a couple of days or have more than one person in the trailer, a real bathroom would be better. They are simple to dump out. I can dump it into my septic system but Flying Js have dump sites as do many campsites.

I opted for the Porta Potty from WallyWorld. It comes apart and is eazy to carry. I dump it into any toilet. When winter comes, I just pick it up and place it in the basement. No worry about freezing. It is stored it the closet of the camper, where it is used. Or if things get crowded, I can take it out and place it in the portable shower / potty tent that I bought from Cabela's, or in the back of the trailer. I do keep deoderant chemicals in the tank.

I use a porta-potti in my trailer and either dump it in a field or toilet, which ever is easiest. I try to use the public restrooms (when available) whenever I do anything "stinky"(aka #2), so my porta-potti doesn't get too disgusting. I can't believe I'm writing about this....I love this site!
I got my porta-potti at a white elephant Xmas party. It was with my husband's work friends(non-horsey, non-outdoorsy) and they thought it was sooooo funny that somebody brought a porta-potti to exchange....They thought it was even funnier when I immediately grabbed it with delight! My husband doesn't think anyone has treated him quite the same since then. It's his crazy wife they're afraid of!

We use both, our trailer has a toilet but we still have the porti potti from our old trailer. When we are on camping trips we put the porti and the back of the trailer and if you are outside you can just use the porti. we also use it in the dressing room of the bumper trailer for day rides sure beats finding alog in the woods. To me the porti pooti is the easiest to dump.

My only complaint about porta-potties is that they are so low to the ground, so I found a chair at a flea market, my husband put a platform on it to hold the porta-potty and left the seat loose to fit over the top. I have a chair to sit on and pull my boots on, take the lid off and have a "regulation size" toilet. Like the others, my husband's friends don't understand why I was so thrilled. (They didn't think the traffic cones or getting lights in my barn was a great Christmas gift either-what do they know???)

I use the porta-potty that came with my husband's boat. He uses a coffee can when he fishes - can't be bothered with the potty. When I get to a camp site, I clean out the horse area, set up my potty and Coleman Hot Water heater in there and we're set to go. I try to use the campground johns if I can to avoid filling the potty, but you can't beat having that convenience in the middle of the night. Before I leave camp, I take the tank off the potty and dump it in the campsite toilet. I wash it out with bleach when I get home. ... No gray water tanks to worry about.
One time my husband gave me a dump truck for mother's day so I could move the manure, but he sold it on me so I made him buy me a tractor for my birthday. Most of my husband's friends call me a red neck! Can you imagine????

I use a porta potty I bought from Wal-Mart and I've seen them in JcWhitney and camper magazines.
I dump mine in the dump station if a campground offers it or dump it in one of their portable toilets. I prefer to dump before going home.
If you dump around the camp make sure it's far enough away or dig a hole and bury it. I once had someone dump right behind my trailer instead of theirs and the smell was awful for a couple of days.
When I insured my trailer my agent asked me if I had a holding tank because it made difference on the cost of insurance. I would have been more if I did.

Just one "environmental" suggestion: always get the non-formaldahyde chemical for either type & also the toilet paper made for them - it disolves much easier & also as I said, better for the environment! I also have both...the porti from my old trailer that I use when the weather has not straightened out enough to want to unwinterize the trailer & then the self contained, built in one for the better times of yr! Both have their pros & cons.

I opted for a porta-potty instead of holding tanks and plumbing. (which can still be added later if desired) I got my porta-potty at Sears. It is a little taller and sturdier than the ones at Walmart. plus it flushes! Works great and I just dig a hole and dump it in the toilet at home.
