I have been reading the other post about a stolen LQ Trailer and was wondering if there are security systems out there for trailers? I looked at the Lo-Jack system and it sounds like you can get that installed on your trailer. Has any had this system setup? Does it work? I would figure after spending 15K+ on a trailer with LQ a security system for a couple hundred bucks would give me some more comfort at night.

I know here locally we had a rash of construction equipment being stolen. The police used small transmitters (like you would use on a wild wolf or other wild animal) and hide the transmittes in packs of cigarettes, inside the housings of saws and in the framers tool trailers. They would intentionally leave these unprotected in areas that the the other thefts had occured in. In the following weeks they caught a number of thieves with the goods in the homes or garages. The thefts came to an abrupt halt. These transmitters only transmitted about 15 miles. So they worked in these situations. A trailer is more than likely to be stolen and hauled across state lines where nobody will recognize it. So these 15 mile transmitters would not be the right choice. They also had a limited time frame due to the battery size. Not something you install and forget. But rather something you use for Bait and if it's not stolen in a week or two, replace the battery. In the past I have left tool trailers on Job sites and one of the things we have done is place a chain through the wheels of the trailer. The wheel will not go more than one revolution before the chain stops it. Most theives don't want to get out the tools to cut a chain off. They just want to hook up and drive off. It's not fool proof, just one more deterant.

I guess another alternative is a tire boot, like they use in big cities for cars that are parked illegally. Those won't let the tires roll, and would be a bear to try and cut off.

I was thinking along the lines of On-star. That way you could call for help in remote places and have a smoke detector connected to it instead of the airbag.
