Thats dry rot from exposure. It weakens the tire and can cause it to blow. I lost a tire a few weeks ago and when I took it in (it looked new) the dealer ran the numbers off the side and found that the tires were made 7 years ago. They were the original tires. He said that trailer tires rarely run out of tred (unless you haul a LOT) but fail due to age. I bought a new tire and before I go to NM I will be replacing the others.

After a couple of blow outs on my old bumper pull trailer, I invested in tire covers. Have them on both my trailers now. Hope the covers will help delay the tires from cracking.

I would definately have them replaced. Ever seen what blown trailer tire can do to a fender or worse to a person airing up a low tire? I was always told that trailer tires should be replaced every 3 to 4 years regardless of tread wear. That might be extreme considering the cost of tires, but as a safty issue to my animals it's worth it to me.

I just noticed today on all 4 horsetrailer tires a very fine crack in the sidewalls going all around.
the cracks is probably just 1/64 or 1/32 " thick. the tires are about 8 years old a not alot driven.
profile is still very good.
Is there any concern about safety ?
thanks for any information.
yes that is an extreme saftey issue. any tire that old with visable cracks can fail at any time. most tire manuf. recommend replacing tires at 3 or 4 years whatever the milage. if you prowl the rv boards some people go 6 or 7, tire covers will help prolong a tires life. for the $500 +/- a new set would cost verses what a blow out can cost in lost time, damaged equipment, etc i believe the choice should be obvious.
