Anyone ridden/camped at Indian Mounds in Clayton, Oklahoma lately? I know its been for sale, but still open. Are the trails marked? We are looking for some place not too terrible far, as we only have Saturday and Sunday to ride, but that has electrical hook ups. This is about 3 hours drive. One other place that is 3 hours is closed for hunting and the other place has no electric. I actually have never camped there, but heard the riding is pretty nice.

Have you ever ridden Cedar Lake in Heavener, OK? Camping is nice with hook ups and trails are plentiful and easy to moderately challenging.

Lake Murray near Ardmore, OK has hookups and we always have groups coming up from Texas. LBJ grasslands is also nice but I don't know about hookups there.

The last time I went to LBJ it was only primitive. I didn't find the trails challenging at all.

Well, I really wanted to get some info on Indian Mounds. :( We have spent many many weeks at Cedar Lake. Its a little further than we wanted to drive but have decided to go on up Friday after work. We were hoping to go somewhere closer and just leave Saturday morning. Ardmore is a long ways from where we live. I am also very familiar with the Grasslands. Again too long a drive and primitive camping only. We do have a generator. Just prefer to have hook and water for a quick weekend get away. Now, anyone been to Indian Mounds in the recent past? I have heard the riding is good. Guess I just need to go explore it. Of course its only 50 more miles to Robbers Cave, but its a slow 50 :(

CTRider, did you get to make it to Indian Mounds? If so how was the riding and the camp? We are always looking for new and good places to ride.

We have not been to Indian Mounds in a long time, but Horse Heaven near Winding Stair Mountain has a nice camp with full hookups, pull throughs, and pens... trails vary from soft to challenging with pretty overlooks... ( about 1 1/2 hrs north of Dallas. Cedar Lake is a great camp, but we apparently have not ridden all the trails...( last time there in April of 2011, we rode one day, woke up to 16" of snow the next morning). Clayton would be closer?

We have been to Cedar Lake and Horse Haven and enjoyed both. They are about the same distance as Clayton. Just looking for different places. We regularly have to travel 10-12 hours to get some good riding. We are not far from the Gulf of Mexico where everything is flat land with very little scenery.

Muleman; Have you been to Caney Mountain or Falling Waters in Arkansas??? There is also Rafter D in southcentral Arkansas.... OK, some hookups, wasn't impressed with the trails....Of course, I was not crazy about Robber's Cave in Oklahoma either.

Old Joe was a very good friend, we rode Falling Water a lot of times and are planning a trip back soon. I have many GPS coordinates marked. We have only been to Caney twice but enjoyed it both times and plan on returning there also. We took a truck ride to Robbers Cave and weren't impressed

Wow I am behind on posts. No I havent been anywhere. It has snowed and rained and sleeted gallons, buckets and barrels. I live in the normally very temperate north eastern corner of Texas. We are not supposed to get over 7 inches of snow in one day! We have ridden below Natchitoches, Louisiana the last couple of weekends, at Red Dirt and Kisatchie Hills. If you are in Louisana and looking for a good place, this is it. Primitive camping, although Cane camp has running water, flush toilets, and electricity in the bathroom (no shower). The terrain is some of the most varied and beautiful. Very rolling hills with fairly steep long climbs. Mostly sandy with outcroppings of sandstone. It is barefoot friendly. Even the gravel FS roads are easy on the feet. There is a 31 mile multi use trail and a myriad of interconneting woods trails, gravel roads, tiny FS woods roads, and some other hiking/horse trails. January 1st thru April there are NO ATV's allowed. Even when they hit the Sandstone multi use/ATV trail, there are many other riding options to avoid them. The ravines and bottoms are gorgeous. We like to camp at Custis and explore, or ride in the Wilderness area, no ATV's allowed. I do plan on checking out Indian Mounds, and maybe this summer going north up in Arkansas to ride. We just finally broke the drought and had a super wet winter. And I have a new horse to condition! Just itching to get to really covering some miles.
