I bought a new 2011trailer in Dec 12. I just checked on the tires that they were made in 08 which means they are 6 years old. I know the tread and side walls all look good at present and of course they have very few miles on them, but due to age, when should I replace?

Now would be a good time to replace them. What size tire are you running on your trailer? If they are 16", an American made name brand "LT" truck tire will work in the place of a 16" "ST" trailer tire, in most cases. Search trailer rires on the HTW forum.  Some trailer tire facts.... http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTrailerTireFacts.dos

Why would a new 2011 trailer have 2008 tires on it, I would contact the selling dealer...

My guess is they made the 2011 trailer in 2010 but you are right, why put a 2 year old tire on a new trailer ? I got quite a deal on this so I couldn't really negotiate this at the time!

I just learned of a USA Tire maker Gladiator that offers a 14ply Steel belted side wall trailer tire that has been getting good reviews.

Fom Gladiator's web site:

  • Time, heat and the elements take their toll on a trailer tire. Over the course of three years, you can expect about one-third of the tire’s strength to be compromised.
  • Remember that trailer tires do not have the life expectancy and tread wear of vehicle tires. The tread wear for a trailer tire is only about 5000-12000 miles, and trailer tires should be replaced every three to four years regardless of mileage, appearance or tread depth.

What is the size of the trailer? If you are up north and you aren't subject to the extreme southwestern sun...you might get another year out of them...but it boils down to you making the call
