Does anyone know where the terms 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton came from? Do they actually relate to anything or are they just general terms? What actually makes a 3/4 ton pickup a 3/4 ton pickup other than the fact that the manufacture says that is what it is?

It deals with the payload capacity of the truck.

1/2 ton used to have a 1000lb payload

3/4 ton used to have a 1500lb payload

All of these capacity have grown as manufactures try to One Up each other in the sales wars.
