They drop the drive shaft to protect your transmission...towing a truck with the driveshaft in place can trash a transmission in under 50 miles...because since the transmission would have to be in neutral, there is NO LUBRICATION taking place inside during the tow.

USRider towed my truck and trailer this summer... They loaded the dually onto a flatbed and pulled the trailer with the horses with another dually truck. Wrecker guy says he never pulls a truck with the trailer still hooked up. Hauled the truck to the GMC dealer in Statesville, N.C. and pulled the trailer to his shop and parked it in the shade, pulled cord out to trailer so wife could run our 48" fan on horses. 97 degrees that day.
