I am looking for a 2 horse bp slant load to haul a 16.2H warmblood (82 blanket). I know straight loads offer more space but my horse is very happy in slants. I also just haul one horse so a slant would spread the load more evenly. I plan to haul him in the rear stall. What is the ideal stall size for him to be comfortable aside from the 7'6" ht? How long and how wide should the trailer be? Should the trailer be 7' wide or would 6'9" do? 14' long or longer? My tow vehicle is an suv with capacity of 6k lbs so weight is a factor. Should I look at all alum or galvanized steel frame/alum skin? Thanks for any input.

it depends....I have a draft (90" blanket, almost 18h) and we have a 3H GN slant Silverlite with 50" wide stalls, trailer is 7'6" tall and 7+ inside and he fits very well. We also have a 16H and 16'2H light horses and they get lost in the stalls...our 15.2 QH is even worse. For the length Much depends on the angle of the stalls. Logan has some pretty long/wide stalls as well. Featherlite makes "big horse" trailers right out of the factory as well. With a 6K capacity you should probably have to go with a fairly light trailer(3000-3500lbs) if we assume that horse+tack+hay/water= 2,000lbs. I would personally go with aluminum as they fair better over time. You could also look at stock/combo trailers or get a 2h slant and latch the divider to the wall (we did this before our current trailer).A lot depends on your budget as well.p.s. putting the horse on the rear stall might make your trailer light in the tongue and cause sway. But on the other hand int he front it might make it tongue heavy and lift up the front of the towing vehicle. In other words you'll have try to see the best fit.(in general you want the horse (or the heaviest) to stand on the axles.Just be aware that a salesman might say anything to sell you a trailer. If you are at a barn with a lot of trailers ( or have friends with trailers) you should ask if you can load the horse in them just to get a better feel

Different manufacturers have their slant stalls on different angles - therefore, the width will vary between manufacturers.
There won't be a big difference in weight between an alum 2H and a steel 2H.
There WILL be a difference in weight if you choose a stock trailer / slatted sides rather than a enclosed trailer. A ramp will add more weight also.

I recommend a stock-type 2H trailer that is tall enough. No divider will also reduce the weight and give your horse more than enough room. I would be concerned with the height of the trailer being towed by an SUV - because of wind resistance and semi-truck blow-by. Therefore, I would be sure to have a bottom-heavy trailer (steel framed). You can get them with a fully enclosed dressing room/tack storage in front - but be sure to have windows in there; otherwise it's very dark.

Thank you for your advice. My horse is a 16.2 H shire/anglo-holsteiner so if your 18H draft has room in a 7'6" x 7 with 50 " stalls I should be able to scale down a bit from that. My horse has not hauled happily in any brand of stock or straight loads (I used to have a Brenderup) but will load on his own into a slant. I think he likes being able to lean with his shoulder. My son has a 500lb pony that would occasionally be in the front stall to load down the front of the trailer a bit. I guess like you said I will just have to see how it goes.I was hoping to find something preowned but not having much luck. I have my eye on Lakota, Logan , Merhow Verylite, Double D, and 4star. Looked at Featherlite but $$$. Thanks again

Loading a single horse into the rear stall of some 2H BP trailers can unload the hitch and cause towing instability. It all depends on where the axles are located. Many 3H BP trailers can attain an almost balanced loading with one to three horses, have a lighter tongue weight and pull better than a 2H. The weight difference between some 2 and 3 horse trailers may only be a couple hundred pounds, and because the hitch weight may be less, the larger trailer can actually be less of a burden on the towing vehicle than the shorter one. We pulled a 3H BP trailer for a couple of years with a SUV, with no modifications made to the factory hitch.

If you are purchasing a new trailer, most manufacturers can supply a "warmblood" variant that has larger stalls. The box length may be slightly altered, to allow for the longer stall lengths, and the smaller stall divider angles.

If you live in an area where rust is not a problem, the steel framed trailers are less expensive to build and sell. If you need strength, light weight and long term durability, then an all aluminum trailer will serve you well with less maintenance, and reward you later with a high resale value.

I see your point on a 3 horse, then just remove one divider and have a large stall. I don't have a truck though and would be approaching my 6000K tow capacity on my Nissan Pathfinder. I'd really like to stay 5000lb max so I don't cause excessive wear and tear. What brand do you have in mind?Found a new 2 horse slant 2010 Sundowner 727 (on sale!) that has 42" stalls but not insulated. Any thoughts on that? Is condensation really a problem when not insulated and does it help keep the trailer that much cooler? Also looking at a 2012 Lakota 2 horse slant 7'6" tall fully insulated, Dealer says horse would fit.Found an '05 all alum Kieffer Built 7'6"tall x 7'2" wide, but no warranty. Is it true, most warranty issues will occur in first couple of years?Hard to buy online w/o seeing in person so thanks for all of your input.
