OK..So I have issues with my memory... Can someone please re-explain what the GVWR and GAWR mean? I've pretty well figured out that GVWR means gross vehicle weight rating which is Max loaded weight, right? And GAWR front and rear means? where does it tell me what a trailer's empty weight is? ThanksLeslie

A gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the maximum allowable total weight of a road vehicle or trailer when loaded - i.e including the weight of the vehicle itself plus fuel, passengers, cargo, and trailer tongue weight.

The gross axle weight rating (GAWR) is the maximum distributed weight that may be supported by an axle of a road vehicle. Typically, GAWR is followed by either the letters FR or RR, which indicate front or rear axles respectively.

Of the trailers I've owned, not a single one of them had empty weight on them anywhere. For example I've got a trailer that was advertised as 4500# empty. I have my own truck scale and when I checked the weight it's actually just shy of 6000#. Was curious and called the dealer, he said the brochure weight was before rubber mats, interior lining, spare tire, and other misc. things you carry with you every day. Go to a truck stop find a "cat" scale and have it weighed. If you have a local feed store or "co-op" they will usually help you out. Each trailer is different, that's why I weigh all of mine. Manufacturer can say what he wants, I want to know exactly!

Some trailers, Trails West for example, tell you the maximum weight of cargo and livestock the trailer can haul. On these trailers, the difference between GVWR and the maximum cargo capacity is the weight if the trailer. This may not be the case for all trailers, but it is on Trails West.
