Our gas water heater which we have to light manually will not stay alight, the pilot lights okay and it also burns for a while but then it turns off including the pilot, should"nt the pilot stay alight even if the burner shuts off?

some suburban propane heaters will not they go off and re-ignite when needed.  others i have really no idea about for sure.  i think some atwoods stay on???

Sounds like the thermocouple is going, or has gone, bad.

I agree with Tresvolte. I had one do the same thing on a previous trailer. Took about 10 minutes to replace, but the thermocoupler will probably be around $30.

Thanks, can I replace the themalcouple? I did notice today that the pilot flame was not touching the probe but shooting away, is that normal?
