I have drop down windows with bars on my trailer and have always traveled with the slider open but not the windows open...not really sure why but that is just what I have done.

I also have a stock trailer, which is open, and have traveled countless miles with cattle and horses and never thought twice about it, I guess the difference is that in the stock trailer the amimals can move around as they see fit and in the horse trailer they are forced to look out the window.

Do you travel with windows open?

During hot weather I open all the drops. During warm weather I open some of the drops.

During cool weather I usually leave the drops up and just open the sliders and dujring really cold weather. I shut the trailer up a little. The idea is to adjust the ventilation to keep the horses at a comfortable temp.

In the summer, I often drive with a window or two open in the truck, If I can tolerate a 65 mph wind. So can the horses.  I do have screens on all the openings. So even if the drops are down, there is a screen over the opening.

You might be suprised how little air flow you get through the screens with just the sliders open. (try breathing through a hankerchief) If it's much above 45 degrees, we open the drops and keep the bars up.... Not going to haul with horses heads hanging out the window...!!

When keeping the drops down, do fly masks provide as much protection as screens?

Thanks.

With my 3H, I always hauled in warm weather with the drops down (with bars, of course, plus a fly mask most of the time). My seasoned gelding actually loves to look out the window. The first few times I hauled my young horse on that trailer I did leave the drops up/sliders open so she wouldn't get spooked going down the road. But any other situation, drops DOWN for ventilation.

I always put my windows down. My old trailer had screens, my new one has bars, so I apply fly masks to the girls. The question was asked about fly mask, hey.............anything helps, keep some debris at bay.

Just bought some screens for drop down travel and don't like them. While parked the wind was blowing in and the screens were billowing - that told me not much air was moving through them. So it was fly masks on screens off for the trip home.
