I was given this trailer and it was made in in the 70's.  no vin number or title given to me.  I don't even think they were given vin numbers back then.  I have asked delta-no, asked jackson-no, bison- no.

So what kind is it.  I would like to try and find out what kind it is, so i can find the dealer to get info on it.  If not then i have to spend over 600 dollars just to get a title on it.  any help would be great

Finding out the make has nothing to do with getting a title. Reg. it as a homemade if you don't know what it is.

Here in Ohio, It is very dificult to get one that heavy a new vin and title. They basically inspect it as it were a homemade car. They want a notorized bill of sale, receipts for everything you've done to it since it is "homebuilt" and State Patrol inspectors will go over it with a fine tooth comb looking for a vin. If they find one, you may be in trouble. They will make you go back and find the last titled owner and have them go get a new title then sign it over to you. Not to mention that after its all said and done, you pay about $75 and wait for about 6 months to get it to the inspectors plus whatever headaches they give you.

Any trailer in Ohio that is >3000 lbs is required to have a title. Commercial tag rates apply at >5000 lbs regardless of whether or not it is used to make money IIRC.

Something you may also have to deal with is being that heavy, you may have to register it commercial. That's the way it is here UNLESS you have a fridge, some kind of cooking device, a bed, and a porta potty, you may be able to register it as a travel trailer. Farm/Ag tags are no good.

Regardless, the first paragraph will still apply.

I wouldn't suggest you just go weigh another trailer under the commercial/title limit and just go get plates for this trailer. Nor do you want to avoid the State Patrol inspection and extra taxes. That would be illegal.

Also wanted to add that you are required to have a weight slip for the trailer in order to get tags.

Registering and titling a trailer as homebuilt in Ohio is not as easy as many think.

Spent many hours on the phone with them about this. Trust me, they are not willing to help or cut anyone any slack.

BUT Registering a trailer under 3k lbs is easy as pie. No title required, No questions asked. You just have to have a weight slip and need to make up a vin that is between 6 and 17 characters. Oh yeah and $54.50...

Sorry for the run on post.

here in ohio this is what i was told the FIRST TIME:  called the title office then state patrol, then salvage, then courts.  would be over 600 hundred to get tags.

Then went back to the title office:  they told me to contact columbus, they told me what i needed to do.  Go to local bmv get an inspection paper.  53.50 then call the state partol in wilmington and get it inspected.  after that is done, they will issue me a vin plate, take that vin number to the title office and have a title issued.  MUCH simplier.

This trailer was built WAY WAY bak in the 70's and we have been over it with a fine tooth comb, with rust brushes and everything.  NO VIN number nor manu. name.

The guy we got it from bought it about 4 yrs ago and only used maybe 5 times.  he never got a title for it.

But back then those trailers didn't have titles. I also have  a certified weight slip from the pilot for both truck and trailer and even have a trailer weight ticket.

The ppl in columbus were nice and told me that even if i bought the trailer from someone else and they can't find a vin number then its not that hard.

I'd say you were right. Then move to Arkansas where half the trailers, utility, commercial hauling trailers, horse, cattle, etc don't have tags on them to start with~ !48

Well, If you don't think it will be hard..Good luck.

Have you checked on the frame for stamped VIN numbers? Most likely it will only be 6 or 7 digits because of it's age. If it was titled at some point, the numbers are there, it's just finding them. I have an early 70's Cherokee with a 6 digit vin.

I talked to the OSP inpection officer when I was going through it. He said that they want to see a notorized bill of sale and every receipt for the steel, wood, tires, lights, everything that would be needed to make the trailer from scratch. He said that sometimes they will overlook and not be real specific, but to come prepared for someone to be difficult. When I was trying to get my LQ trailer in, it was like a 5 1/2 month wait to Wilmington and 3 month to West Chester. Honestly, the people in Columbus don't really know much about the inspection side of things from my experience(I called 3 different times and got 3 different answers-was told that it was "not that difficult" also). Your best bet is to call one of the inspection stations and talk to them.

Either way, I was told that it would be much easier to register it as a travel trailer rather than a commercial trailer (because of the weight) --cheaper, too.

Ohio SUCKS when it comes to trailers.  All about the $

not saying it will be hard.  I have went thru so many different ppl. when i talked to the TITLE department in colmbus they are the ones that told me that i would be able to take it to an inspection site.  State Highway patrol..  Wilmington i was told is the worst to take it to. When i called them, they told me that i didn't need it inspected.

A huge run around..  I have emailed and shown the picture to every horse trailer company i could think of: shelby, bison, delta, etc.  They all have told me that it looks like a shop built trailer, built way back in the 70s.

The guy we got it from said that the trailer was sitting in the weeds.

We have taken a fine tooth comb and went over this trailer, top to bottom, back to front. NOTHING.  We found a trailer that looks like it and we found were that vin was.  looked on ours, no where to be found.

Im a notary so we have the notized bill of sale, (since the trailer is in the farm name and notmine), and i was told since we were the ones that DIDN"T build the trailer it should be ok.

BUT if not then i have to literaly sue the clerk of courts in order to get a title or vin number issued to me.  It would cost me over 600 dollars for one ffree trailer.
