I just bought a 2001 Exiss 3 horse, MT, 8 ft SW with a factory conversion. Nice clean trailer for an 01..the family is pretty excited, a big upgrade from our stock trailer with a tack room. I paid $17,500 for the trailer, it needs an awning repair and on light replaced so I will have about $18,000 in it. I see similar trailers (make and year) in similar or even worse condition selling for mid 20's and up. Are the prices on HTW realistic? I purchased from an individual that had no computer or digital camera so they were kind of stuck with a local sale. Based on the HTW I think I got a great deal on the trailer and will have a great opportunity for it to hold its value but again I am wondering how realistic HTW pricing is.

I am wondering the same thing? I am a house builder and I think I see a similar thing possibly emerging in trailers as did in homes. The prices of trailers purchased several years ago were substantial due to the economy, material and labor costs and due to the fact that more materials were being installed in them. Some manufactures from especially 2008 to present have cut some of the features out of trailers or dressed them differently to help keep costs down. In homes it is the same way. Homes completed in 2007 or prior probably have more features and quality built in, than homes built after that due to cost cutting measures to remain competitive. Of course, there are exceptions to every generalization. It appears some trailers that are being marketed are being done so in an effort to regain as much as the initial investment as possible (understandably). The trailers that appear to be selling are extra clean or have a more competitive pricing structure than others.I understand if you are selling a product it is hard to sell it for less. I know this too well on a personal level because I eventually had to sell several high end homes for a substantial amount less than their cost. What are others takes on this?

HTW only allows dealers and individuals to advertise their trailer and has no input in pricing them. I agree several trailers are over priced and people have unrealistic expectations. I realize several people have loans on their trailers for more than the trailer is worth, but the market dictates pricing. There is still a good market for trailers fairly priced. i was told along time ago that people can't hardly sell "metal" for less than they paid, but will "give" a bad horse away.

I usually only look at trailers with pictures but there was one on here without pictures, near me and the features I wanted. I decided to check on it and I think I got it for about 4K less than it was worth. Had they posted pictures I think it would have sold before I looked at it and for more $$$

Prices for used products reflect not only the current market, but reflect the relationship to purchasing a new product vs a used product. In the case of homes, the cost to build has not decreased. Lumber hit a 4 high, steel is up 18% in March alone, Roofing shingles jumped 70% over the winter. So there is no way I can build a new house for the same cost I did in 2009 or 2008. But the price is considerable less because there are so many distressed homes on the market from foreclosure market.
But if you look at trucks. New loaded diesel pickup are running high $50k. I bought a new loaded truck in 2006 for $40k. The fact that the new models cost so much more is helping to maintain the price of the used trucks. The same ecconomics apply to horse trailers. If people are financially strapped and seling their assets at distressed pricing, It lowers the price for all. Meaning if somebody bought a $50,000 trailer and has a $1000 a month payment and looses their job, They may be willing to sell it for less than they owe ( just like us home builders did over the last 2 years) just to get out of the loan. If you get enough people dumping their assets then the manufactures ( or builders in my case) have to remove feature and find ways to reduce the cost of the new units to compete.

Sounds like you got a decent trailer for the $$$..and like someone else said, HTW doesn't have anything to do with pricing...a trailer/horse/truck/ home/land, etc. is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it....

I recently considered a 4 year old 7' tall x 8' wide 3 horse trailer with 9' living quarters (top end brand, super clean) that had a new purchase price of just over $50,000.00 that brought $21,500.00 at auction. It ended up a no sale by the owner. A sign of the times unfortunately for all. We all are on the tough end at sometime. Are others seeing similar findings?

I think Horse Trailer World is in a lot of ways like Ebay. When something sells and has been offered to a very large market. What it sells for today is what it is worth today.

blackcows, I think that you did good. I've priced trailers, all aluminium mid and high end for about 7 years on HTW. I would keep checking the same trailers of interest, watching the price drop until it was sold. Eventually, I could recognise a good deal. If I saw a good deal, I watched to see how fast it sold. Many of my marked, "good deal, will sell fast" trailers, did sell fast. If it sold within a week, I figured that it didn't sell much under asking price. By the time I purchased, my research and documentation paid off, as the bank was willing to consider the research for assessed value. You did good! Congratulations on your new purchase!
