What is the advantage of having a slightly wider spindle distance from the inner wheel well wall?

Would this be to help with heat dispersion?  Allow larger tires?

Is it something that can be changed if you have an older trailer and want to increase this distance (width between the two spindles)?  How much would a change like this likely cost?

Thank you.

You could conceivably get a wider tire in there without exceeding the 102" width. But you may have to get a special offset on the rim.

I'd prefer the widest hub to hub I could get, which which lessen the inset of the fender in the horse area.
