My husband and I are ready to upgrade from our 2-horse bumper pull to a LQ trailer. I have already researched different brands and have lined up 4-5 similarly priced models of the same size (different brands) to look at.

Can anyone give me tips on things I can look at to determine the condition/quality of the trailer? All of them are aluminum over steel frame, and vary in age from 2000 model to 2004.

As far as intended use, I am an endurance rider and will use it for attending rides (I did 5 rides last year, plan on doing more once we upgrade the rig). We are also considering this our "vacation home" and plan to do about 2 one-week long trips per year and quite a few other long weekends. We are looking at 3 horse models but will likely only ever trailer two at a time; however, one of them is a tall (17 hand) TB so I am limited to the taller, wider models. We are based in NE Ohio (I know the climate/weather can affect how a trailer ages).

Thanks in advance for any tips.

I would start with all aluminum due to your location. I live in PA and we have similar weather that can lead to corrosion of a steel frame. There are some really great deals out there on used living quarters trailers right now. I would even look for leftovers- I saw one advertised on HTW for 10K less than original asking price.

Since you want to use it for week long trips, be sure to get one with propane tanks to run the fridge, hot water heater and cooktop.

If you only have electric (and many are set up this way) the fridge becomes more of a cooler since you can't run it while driving or if you don't have electric at the campsite.  You can only run your generator so much... (if you have one
