What is ample room in a slant load for a 17 hh horse?

Since our horse has now grown to 17hh he now rubs a spot on his hindquarters when we haul him in our current trailer - 2000 Sundowner Trailblazer II 4horse slant w/8' LQ.

Love our trailer but our needs have changes -- only haul one horse most shows now - so would like less horse area and more living quarters. Prefer 2 horse w/tack, LQ w/ bath/shower/sofa/heat/ac....

BUT need ample space for the "big guy".   What dimensions on the slant load would be large enough?

Any suggestions on a model/make would also be helpful.  Was very satisfied w/the Sundowner.

The trailer I'm shopping for has the same stall requirements. In a two horse slant load trailer, 7' wide (6'9" interior width), you will need a stall floor length of at least 12'. This will give you a stall width of 42"-45" depending on the stall partition angle the manufacturer provides. It will also provide a diagonal stall length of about 10' 5". These measurements are based on a trailer devoid of mangers. For the taller horses, you will need at least a 7 1/2' interior roof height.

There are dozens of notable trailer brands that build all aluminum LQ trailers to your specification. Access some good dealers, write down your needs, and give a sheet to each one. Compare apples to apples.

I would pull a slant divider out and make a "double" stall for an extra large horse. That's what we do with our 4 horse.

Buy a trailer that is 8' wide or like gard said a longer 7' wide that has longer, wider stalls, we have a LARGE quarter horse also that is 17.1hh and 1400lbs and he fit perfect in our Sundower.  It is 8' wide and 7' tall and we have ZERO issues with him (and he is a 14 year old big baby)

I've a 2H slant load Hawk trailer. My big horse is 15'3" and weighs in about 1300 lbs. The front stall is really too small for him. I put him in the second stall which is roomier. He seems to do okay. I do wish I'd had the opportunity to try my horse in the trailer before purchasing. That's really the acid test.

When considering the size of the stall, as stated an eight wide trailer will give you more room for your horse as will the height. But, an often forgotten measurment is the offset of the trailer.  The offset is the measurment of the rear tack. the rear tack measurment front to back. A 54" rear tack will give you about 9" more length corner to corner on the stall than a 48" rear tack.

I have a 17.1 (maybe 17.2 by now...and maybe 18 at the end) Shire and we pretty much load in him in the last two stalls on our 4h slant trailer(7ft wide). Our next trailer, however will most likely build a Featherlite 8549 Big Horse 4 GN....since the have 50" wide stalls and should come in 7'6" wide o 8'

If you're only hauling one most of the time, why not get a straight load?

Was considering a straight load.  Not sure how the horse will load w/one as he's always been in a slant. But it does seem to be a way to have more length.  Thanks!

You can get an 11' stall in an eight foot wide slant load  trailer, 10' 9" in a 7 1/2' wide , and 10' 7" in a 7' wide. It all depends on the floor length and partition angle.
