Got a garmin 550t for christmas.. I haven't had the chance to use it yet, other than taking it outside my house and playing with it a little.. I looked up Texas trail maps online tonight... $99.00.. Which is  a lot of cash, considering how much these things cost.. anybody use any other map sources?  Seems that someone here mentioned US topographical maps, or something like that was compatible with Garmin..  I don't want to pay an addtiional 100 bucks for each state.. HOWEVER... again.. I've not actually used it yet, so don't have any idea what kind of detailed stuff it has... I know my neighborhood isn't on there and it's at least 7 years old..

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/They have free user submitted maps. I downloaded several nearby states topo maps for free. There are also some that include trails but again, these are user submitted, not surveyed so they may be a little off but in general I've found it very useful.

Another place to ask all sorts of GPS questions would be with geocachers. I've found http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/ to be a good resource.

You can create custom raster maps and load them...

http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/cache/offonce/us/onthetrail/custom...

The vector maps from GPSFileDepot will be more responsive and readable at various scales.

Went to this website  http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/.. Downloaded the trail maps to my program files ... and now I can't seem to pull them up to look at them, or figure out how to get them transferrable or sync-able to my gps

The custom maps are not viewable directly, they must be installed through Garmin MapSource software (should have come with your GPSR), or another utility.

I have to agree that GPS software is not very intuitive and took me a while to figure out the basics (about all I know now).  It has been very useful though once I got it set up so don't get discouraged.  Follow the link for the tutorial, like stated you have to go through Garmin's Mapsource to put information on your GPS.  And I believe you can download Mapsource if it didn't come with your GPS for some reason.  I also recommend the forums on Groundspeak, they have a whole section entitled "Getting Started" which was helpful.  Do some searching first on your basic questions as I found many things have already been asked.
