What does FRP in trailer ads mean ?  I know it is probably as plain as the nose on my face. But I just can't figure it out.

The letters indicate a term used in fiberglass construction. It means Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic. The fiberglass is the construction material that is bonded together and kept in shape by the resins, which are plastic in nature. The glass or composits give the materials the necessary strength, the resins keep things together and maintain the desired shape of the moulded product.

Hi Gard, used to be Fiberglass now it's just Fiber. We commonly use other fibers such as nylon or kevlar nowadays as it is a little less brittle and it allows us to make a stronger smoother panel that is more dimensionally stable, it's what I do for a living.

Thanks to you both !  I would have never figured that out.   I am trailer shopping and had no clue what it meant.

Years ago Featherlite had a FRP trailer called "Touch of Class" it was then referred to as Fiberglass reinforced plywood. It has a history of delaminiting. If you took a coin and tapped it, and heard a hollow sound, don't buy the trailer.

Pros & Cons: Aluminum vs. FRP Van Bodies

By Sean Lyden

Each material offers benefits and drawbacks. Aluminum may be less expensive, but fiberglass reinforced plywood (FRP) is sturdier. Evaluate your truck application to determine which factors matter most.

Dear Veteran  That is really helpful to me, I am looking at older 2 or 3 horse slants w/ living quarters or wkenders.  I have actually already encountered some of the touch of class ones. I would not have known. So thank you.

The Dynasty by Sooner was another popular FRP unit. And on that tapping trick- pay particular attention around drop windows, doors, etc. Any where near an edge.

All of the older trailers will be Fiberglass Reinforced Plywood.

It's only been in the last 5-7 years that they replaced the plywood with the honeycomb material. So if the trailer is older it will be plywood and heavy.
