Friends & I spent the whole rainy week at Iron Mtn. Horse Camp. Needless to say we on got a half day's ride in on Thursday but that was okay since we went shopping a couple of days. When we arrived our camp site, that had been reserved (or so we thought) for 6 months, were given to other people but it turned out okay since we did get some more private site on the other side of the camp ground. That would not have been so bad but this was the second year in row this has happened about the camp sites being given to some one else. So next year we are planning to stay possible at Hungry Horse East. I hope everyone else had a better week than I. Just had to vent.

I'm wasn't knocking the place because Sheila really is a nice person & Iron Mtn. is a very well kept place but it is not run like a business. You may or may not be able to find management when & if you need them. They don't check coggins against the horses as they come in, Just put them in a stall, fill out paper work when ever someone is in the tack/office store. I'm sorry but my horses are kept up to date on all shots & I sure don't want them getting any thing from some one else's that may not be up to date. Okay so I'm picky but that's just me I guess. I really don't want any one to think it's not a nice place because it is. It's just we have had some bad situations the last couple of years. It may just be our little group so don't give up on a place because one person has a bad experience.

We're going to Hungry Horse next week. I started a post asking about what to do around there if it rains and no one has responded, but I'll bet you can answer that question. LOL Any interesting places? Not into mall shopping, but quaint little shops or antiqueing is always fun. Are any of the trails better rides as far as scenery goes?

Any of the trails have some great scenery but some of the trail can be a little ruff up & down. It is so peaceful and you will get to see deer as well turkey. There are great antique (sp) stores & a western store by I-81. There are lots of antique stores in Galax, which is only 25 miles from camp. The weather has been just great so the trails should be in top notch condition too but you will need shoes on horses.

In my opinion, IMHC is more centrally located to the trails. HHE is more towards the east end of the Forest. I've ridden there for five years and have mapped over 100 miles of trails.

I have riden the area for 8 years and stayed at both camps, I love Iron Mountain, it is one of my favorite places to camp. I have travelled all over NC, Tenn, & VA and found Iron Mountain to be one of the best places to camp and ride. Some of the trails are the same at Iron Mountain and Hungry Horse, but Iron Mountain is centrally located, so you can access more trails. The owners are great, Sheila trys extra harded so please everyone, I have seen her let a customer use her personal horses when their horse was injured getting off the trailer. I am a regular customer, she always checks my coggins the first of the season and if I have a new horse. She has wonderful barns, safety of our horses is very important to her.
