We are looking for a small generator to take with us camping. We have a big 6500 watt generac and it is a pain to load and a pull start and is sometimes hard to pull. I saw these powermax generators on ebay that have a 4400 surge watts and 3400 continuos with electric start for $449. Would that be big enough to run the AC and a few lights? Anyone have any experience with this brand. I know it would not compare with a Honda or something like that. We just can't afford one of those. We would only be using it a few times a year so it wouldn't be used alot. Anyway would appreciate any info. Thanks.

Another Chinese knock off.... Is this the one?  http://www.gensetsources.com/powermax-generators/4400-watt-gas-powered-portable-generator.htm  I see it is rated at 69db. That's not very quiet, I would guess your 6500 is a little louder. It would be OK as long as you are a long way from anyone else.... Like maybe one mile away. The Honda and Yamaha inverter generators are rated at around 58db at full load. For every two decibles the sound value doubles. 60db is twice as loud as 58db, 62db is twice as loud as 60db, etc. etc.  Save your money and get a EF3000iseb Yamaha or a EU3000iSA Honda, you and your camping friends will be glad you did.

Folks on Amazon.com  rate them highly!!  http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tools&field-brandtextbin=PowerMax

To give you another idea of the sound level... a push mower at operating rpm is 75 to 80 decibels... Remember, most decibel ratings are at 25 foot away. If you are next to the mower, the decibels will be 10 to 12 higher. Ear protection is recommended for usage longer than 15 minutes.

I just bought a Cummins/Onan P4300ie and they state 62 @ full load and it is not near as loud as the Onan mircoquiet LP we had on our last trailer. These are cheaper than the Honda and Yamaha with MORE power.

HTB... Is that P4300 set up to burn Gasoline or LP at the flip of a switch? You hauling it on the truck bed or in a trailer compartment? Always thought it would be neat to house a generator in a under body tool box on a flat bed like yours..... Generator is out of the weather, you're able to lock it down, it's out of the way and it's with the truck no matter what trailer your pulling.

retento, installed a generator under a truck bed on one of our site trucks a few years back.  It was a little bit of a pain after a while.  Fueling was the biggest problem and the employees started complaining about it so much that we turned the box it was in back into a storage lock box and just loaded the generator in the back of the truck.  What works/worked better is a flat bed with 8' storage boxes down each side of the bed with the a/comp on top of one and the generator on top of the other one.  That's a much better setup.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't plan on using this thing in a campground. It will be out in the middle of nowhere and only a few hours at a time. I can't afford a Honda or Yamaha. I was looking at this because it is lightweight, electric start and reasonably priced. I was hoping someone had used one and if they had any trouble with it. I would not expect it to be the same quality as the others. Most of the generators in the cheaper range have alot higher sound ratings than this. I've seen alot in the 70's and some even 80. Anyway if I do get one of these I will report back.

Go for that Powermax then, and let us know how it does. You'll love the fact that you won't have to yank that cord to get it started. I had to use the "rip cord" on my Arctic Cat 4 wheeler a while back.... Found out that I was running out of arms and breath real fast!!! Pull the cord, hold throttle and hold the compression release all at ther same time!!!

You can also find a muffler for the generator.  I don't remember the wabsite off hand, but you could probally google it.

Here's one website

The less expensive generators often only have a small inefficient muffler. It's one way they sell for less money. Depending on the make and model of your generator, it's possible to fit a muffler from various  garden tractors. They are usually designed for larger HP motors and will reduce the exhaust noise, without creating a great deal of back pressure.

The mufflers for the multiple cylinder, water cooled, gas and diesel engines, work very well. Some of the smaller aftermarket mufflers for imported automobiles are also available. Most auto parts and muffler stores carry a wide variety of generics, and they can be purchased by size and shape.

A muffler shop can also create a different exhaust pipe shape to redirect the exhaust gasses. This can be important if you plan on a permanent installation, or want to run the generator within your trailer.

retento, this is a gas unit. Right now I have it on the bed locked to the headache rack with a cover over it. I have been thinking about installing it under the bed and replace one of the front boxes (never have used the box on the drivers side front yet) and intalling a fuel lid in the bed above the generator to fill it with and using the actual door for the entry panel then running a short 30a cord from the gen to the back of the bed where my other plug are located.

Neat idea, will let you know if I get it done.

3 Willows Farm,  I think the P4300ie is the largest quiet generator they offer.  They do have a smaller P3200 that is more like the Honda EU3000 but it is about the same price as the 4300ie.
