Steel construction--frame. How far apart is considered safe for steel frame members? 24" on center or smaller? And with steel are they okay square instead of tubular, and if so, what would be the minimum size? Inch? Inch and a half?

we use 20" centers, 2x1 - 14 gauge.  Don't compromise on wall strength.  Square is probably ok but I would go with 1 1/2"
