I don't post here often; am mostly a lurker, reading for the valuable input often found here, from those with both experience AND common sense! However, I felt this was well worth sharing, as so many here HAUL horses a LOT....I find it very scary.

This link was sent through a 'horse show politics' forum I signed up on. It came through a member there, but yes, it IS probably from the NO to NAIS folks(who, IMO, are right on target).

http://arkansasanimalproducers.8k.com/whats_new_54.html.

I am 'down' to only my miniatures, which I drive, but no longer breed show(Thanks to the ever-escalating costs of about everything it takes to care for horses, and me being on a fixed income, and getting ever older...), but even I would be adversely affected by some of the requirements being proposed! I will be contacting my congressional reps yet again to state my opposition to these kinds of intrusions into our personal privacy.

Best wishes to all,

Margo C-T in New Mexico (who has a veritable LIFETIME--58 years--of continuous horse ownership, daily stewardship, travel and competition w/ horses, under her belt--along with a deep and abiding love for equines).

I am rabidy opposed to NAIS. If implemented, I will NOT comply. The USDA will just have to do whatever they think they can get away with. I deal with the USDA on a routine basis because of my chinchilla business, and although the local inspector is a decent woman, she is tasked with enforcing the RIDICULOUS laws written up by morons in washington who never so much as fed a gerbil. After dealing with this nonsence on a personal level, I can tell you that it is a frustrating nightmare. I must comply to stay in business, but if NAIS becomes law, my business will become history. I will not tolerate another layer of intrusion into my personal business.

I live in NM too. I am already sick of the NM livestock board shoving paperwork down my throught about premissis permits. Every one they send I burn. I too would like to see the spread of disease end, but this is not the avenue we should be on. The Government needs to butt out of everyones business. Don't they have their hands in enough American pockets? Thanks for sharing this info. I will looking further into this too.

To me the most interesting part of this gov't scheme is just how the gov't intends to pay for it and enforce it.  Maybe the USDA has not heard about the economic recession?

www.libertyark.net I've been mentioning this coalition for a while on HTW.Listen.People that own, raise, breed, and sell animals better get serious about standing up to this, because,THEY ARE serious themselves. We are gradually losing our rights in this country on a regular basis. This is one more example.Until people stand up on their haunches and shout from the highest housetop "ENOUGH" it will go on and on.

Rose,

You asked how the government intends to enforce NAIS. Well, one method on the table is to make it mandatory for vets, meter readers, other utility workers mailmen to report the presence of livestock on your property. Talk about BIG BROTHER!!!

I am not a fan of NAIS any more than the rest of you. You need to read up on NAIS though. It is voluntary and there are no plans to make it mandatory at a national level. If it is made mandatory, it will be at the state and local levels. Plus, they have some big organizations on board...American Angus Assoc, AQHA, National Pork Council....

I got all worked up about this once, and did some checking of my own. After I saw this post on it, I went back and double checked to make sure nothing had changed. Like I said, I am not a fan of it, just check it out yourself instead of relying on info from others. www.usda.gov/nais

OK,don't sweat it.Before you know it,it WILL be mandatory. That's their goal, and, they're moving towards it pretty fast.It is already mandatory in some states,(whether or not it is your particular state) it should still raise an alarm in your own personal privacy system that it could even be thought/talked about, and have the power and push behind it that it does.

I never said don't sweat it. I said check it out yourself. Don't rely on what someone else tells you. Even on the LibertyArk website it states that it is an issue to take up on local and state levels. You can't transport or show a horse without a Coggins. Is that a bad thing?

It's not a bad thing, but a horse with a negative coggins today may not be negative next week so I think its a fairly useless thing.  Especially since I've only had the coggins papers checked twice, two years apart on the same property/trail ride in Tx.  They haven't even been checked while crossing the state line between NM and TX.   I've never had health papers checked and travel papers have only been  checked once.

Cross over into Florida without proper documentation  (Negative Coggins, 30 day health certificate) and they'll make you wish you never seen a horse!!

I've always had the papers, I've just never had them checked.  I believe in Murphys law.  If you have it you won't need it, if you don't have it everyone that sees you will want to check.

It is for just that reason that the small operators had better work together. All the big boys in the game are going to ram this down our throats if we don't put up one heck of a fight to stop it.
