Since the cost of fuel now determines how many times my trailer leaves the driveway, my husband mentioned something about the new full size Toyota 4/x4 trucks as a possible alternative to his ¾ ton 4x4. Not so sure I like the idea myself, I may need to part with my suv and take over his ¾ ton since I drive less miles to work.

Has anyone gotten on of these? Can you really get 20+ miles per gallon? I’m pulling a Sundowner Sunlite, all aluminum, 2 horse slant with 8foot dressing room and get about 14 miles a gallon with one horse. Thoughts?

The new Toyota trucks have alot of power with the I Force V8 I have a customer who twos with his a flatbed bumper pull with a jeep on it. He claims 16-18 and 20 without pulling. He says he has plent of power and he has the truck lifted with large tires onit. Plus he has a computer monitoring aftermarket system in it to mange his fuel so that is where he gets his readings. We have one here at the office we raise a small lift with slightly large tires it still has plenty of power and gets better mileage then my 3/4 ton.

I did not want to be a new truck so I have switched things on my Gas 3/4 ton chevy such as exhaust, air box, and other items to improve my mileage.

Did I read that right?  He claims 16-18 towing a jeep, with bigger tires AND a lift?  I claim BS.  What was he running 35 mph?  Hell with those numbers I just as well trade in my Dmax.  IIRC last time I hauled a car on my flatbed I got 14 mpg at 65 mph.

Barntoys,

Check out some of the Toyota forums for real world mpg, throw out the highs (Im pretty sure Curly's friend is "high") and lows and you should have some workable numbers.

YOU CAN CHECK OUT TUNDRATALK.NET, bUT I WOULD CONSIDER WAITING ANOTHER YEAR BEFORE BUYING A TUNDRA, THEY ARE REPORTING LOTS OF FIRST YEAR ISSUE STILL. BUT THE FUEL ECONOMY IS ONLY ABOUT 13/17

Why do you think TOYOTA joined The Detroit Three......to protest the raising of CAFE limits, because their trucks get POORER mileage than their American counterparts, in general...

You didn't offend me. I have a 1500 GMC with over 204,000 miles on it and it purrs like a kitten. Hubby and I went through it a while back (changed front break pads, checked u-joints etc.) and we were surprised at how "tight" everything was for having so many miles. She does not burn any oil. She will go through (seal is leaking) a quarter to a half quart in between oil changes but considering her age......I'm still smiling. It is nice having an old dependable broke in truck around where you don't have to worry so much about the paint getting scratched by a tree branch.

That sounds real life.  It is after all powered by a what, 5.0 or 5.7 liter V8 engine?

I live in SA and most of the local vehicles are Toyota and the like...I have a toyota 3.o kzte turbo diesel (My wifes car) which is a very small truck compared to what you guys are used to. It gives me about 18mpg empty but drops to about 10mpg when towing a 2H BP @ around 60.

My own vehicle is a F250 dbl cab 4x4. It is made in Brazil and is fitted with a 4,2l MWM motor. This gives me around 17mpg empty and when I tow my Cherokee 4H Tomahawk with small LQ it drops to about 12mpg - which is better that the little Toyota.

What I am trying to say is that the smaller (and smaller engined ) trucks are not neccisarily lighter on fuel - cos they end up working so much harder to get the job done....Hold on to your Dmax.

I recently watched Top Gear (a UK motoring TV programme) and they said that the F series Ford is the top selling vehicle in the world. over 1million are sold every year (that is 114 every hour 24-7)  Cant be much wrong with them then hey????

I love our Toyota - they are good vehicles - just dont think they are built as tough as the F250's.

Anyone got a Dodge Ram 250 ... would love to know what mpg they give.

Cheers for now

Nick - Sunny South Africa

The Popular Mechanics Magazine comparison of the top 5 pickups shows the Tundra getting 14/18 in their tests.

http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/new_cars/4212506.html

That is exactly the same mileage as the Ford.

My neighbor has one,  He likes the truck and says it preforms very well towing his boat and trailer full of equipement for the scouts ( which are 4000-5000 lbs).  We took a trailer of 5 horses hunting this past weekend, It probably weight 12,000 lbs.  He was amazed how easily my F350 w/powerstroke pulled it up some pretty steep mountain passes here in Utah.  When he asked what kind of mileage I got, I told him I get 14 city / 19 on the highway and 11.5-12 pulling the loaded trailer. He couldn't believe it. Same mileage as his Toyota but with enough power to pull a heavy load.

My boss has an '08 Toyota Tundra 4x4.  uses it to  pull a bumper pull travel trailer- not sure how much it weighs but it's about 20ft. long w/ glide out.   he said it pulls fine on hills and dosn't have problems stopping  but the truck gets about 7-8 mpg towing this thing.

I have a 2000 Dodge 2500 4X4 diesel that I use to pull my 1990 30 foot Trail-et.  It has 270000 miles on it.  I just replaced brakes, shocks and tires on it.  It has regular mantainence and mechanic says it is great shape.  I did look at a 2008  1 ton dually but can't afford the $79000 price tag.   I weighed the trailer and it weighs 7100# with out horses but does have a bit of a LQ's.  Fully loaded I get appr. 12-15 mpg and empty over 20.  Hubby says it also depends on who's driving ;)

I listened to a podcast review on the new tundra, the reviewer said he was amazed how bad it was. All he had heard is how great it was going to be so he thought he may have had a lemon. He traded the test vehicle and found the replacement to be just as bad. His main complaint was how loud the motor was in the interior; he also said the seats were very uncomfortable and the interior controls were cheap. I pull with my 08 Duramax but the truck I use everyday is a Toyota Tacoma. My Tacoma has been an amazing vehicle, probably the most dependable I have ever had. Give the new Tundra some time and I'm sure it will pan out.

We've been (kinda) looking at the new '09 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4.. S'posed to drop back to a 4 cyl when not working hard, but pull @ 10,000  pounds without a wimper.  Plus, it's got all the gadgets and widgets that people like me love..... I've decided not to get it yet.. My Toyota SUV is almost paid for and I hate to start on another note...I've only got 2 horses and don't need a big trailer... I'd love to find something used and keep my personal car as well, but hubby says no... i might wait a couple of years and try to find one of those new dodges used .. I hate to buy anything that expensive new... I'd rather let someone else absorb the decrease in value after driving it off the sales lot..  If any of you out there get one new... Tell me how you like it... i've never had a dodge before and with it's prior reputation, I'm a little leary.. Now, I hear, they're supposed to have one of the best warranties out there..
