Bought a new filly, she's 102 miles/2 hours from me. She's been in a trailer a couple of times with her mama, but that's it. Which trailer to use??? The Circle M, plywood lined, steel stock, that's not got any padding, or the Silver Star, three horse slant without the dividers, that has rubber up 48" on the wall.

Haul her alone, or with "Tonka", my Icelandic horse that loves babies? He'll ride in the first stall behind the stud divider, she'll be able to smell and peep at him through the gaps in the dividers. Jennifer may ride in the back with her for a few miles, we'll use the walkie-talkies to keep in contact. Don't even want to think about tying her. She's halter broke, she parks out, loads, leads, etc. First time I saw her, she walked up to me like she had always known me..... Doesn't seem afraid of my wheelchair like 99% of all other horses, guess that was another selling point!!!

"They" were suppose to wean her this past Friday, 08/21/08, that was her birthday, 4 months old. I'm going to pick her up this coming Saturday morning. 08/30/08. Never hauled many babies, we always raised our own. Bought this one as a replacement for one that was a premature still born this spring. These pictures were taken on 07/19/08.

I would think either trailer would be fine, I would bring a buddy for the baby to ride with so it will stay calm. Just make sure the buddy trailers well.

greyhorse: You can drop the ramp on any of our trailers, let Tonka go, and he'll walk across the yard and get in the trailer by himself. He loves to ride about as good as I do!!

We've hauled many babies at weaning. Definitely do not tie her!!! We found it best to just get them in the trailer and go. Stop and take a look at her about 10 miles down the road, but don't go in with her. Babies are very adept at adjusting to new things and should ride well. Bed the trailer well, as she may actually lie down and rest, which would be best. Both of your trailers are horse safe, so it really shouldn't matter which one, but the dividers must be out, so the stock trailer may be easier. Good luck. She really looks like a cutie and a keeper!

Dividers already out of the slant except the front stud divider. She couldn't get under or over that anyway. Only other baby I ever hauled alone was Tonka when he was 5 months old..... He did fine, alot of his 4 hour trip was in construction traffic and a 4-5 mile backup from some accident on I-40. I stopped several times to check on him cause I couldn't feel him moving around.... He was just standing looking out between the slats of the stock trailer.

After a few days, this filly will go out into the pasture with this Icelandic. We turn all our babies out with him when they are weaned.... He makes for a good MAMA!!

Either trailer should work fine.  I used a 2 horse slant w/divider but I had the divider pulled back and secured.  A lot of bedding and my little 4 month old (Takoda) did just fine and we also had a 2+ hr. ride.  I did stop to check on him and he was fine.  Was nervous when I got home and opened up the back that he would come flying out.  He didn't.  Just stood there like the good little boy that he is.  Have fun!

I hauled a 6 month old colt alone in my GN trailer( it was a 4 hour trip). I tied back the divieders, put in some nice bedding and a bit of hay. He didn't need a buddy, they can just get in the way. I didn't tie him just allowed him to find his balance himself. He was never hauled before and had been recently weaned. Me thinks horses settle down much better than the people...........

ooooooooohhhhhhhhh farmbabe said it right
We usually haul a baby by itself in the stock trailer; either of yours should be just fine. Congrats on your new baby!

I would suggest you not allow Jennifer ride in the trailer with the filly. Filly is big enough to really hurt a person and should she really become upset just where is Jennifer going to go? Another thing to consider is that you will need to open the door to let Jennifer out that could be a problem also if the filly gets out. Anyway, good luck with the filly and the  ride to her new home.
