Yesterday we took Sassy for her first rides. We'd been feeding her in the trailer for about a week and things had gone well, so we figured a short ride would be a good idea. We just took her to the neighbor's since it is familiar and we could walk her home if she wouldn't get back in the trailer, but it went very well. So, we walked her around a while and loaded her back up and took her to an in-law with a nice wooded path. She really enjoyed that, I think, and she got to try some field-height red clover, which she loved. It was a great day, and I'm thankful at what a great horse we have. Now I need to replace the old pads in the trailer asap and bolt on a chain or two to hold the doors open, that sort of thing, but she's ready to travel! Yay!

Great job! so nice to hear when someone has the patience to train there horse properly, and not just beat them/exhaust them/ force them into a trailer. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the kind words. Sassy is a member of the family, and will never be subject to harsh training. Tisha and I won't have it. It's not necessary under any circumstance in my opinion, but with her not being a working horse or a competition horse that has to be up to a certain level of performance by a certain age, there's not even any reason to hurry, much less be harsh. Of course, we are very stern about rearing in the stable, petulant butt-aiming and safety issues in general, but that sort of thing has been VERY infrequent. We have the luxury of being patient, and a horse who responds to patience. Tisha will train her to good manners and to ride, and they'll have plenty of fun and adventures, and it'll be on their timetable, not according to some book or whatever is traditionally "expected". She's simply Tisha's horse, and that's all she has to be.

Good. That's a great attitude to have. I've had people tell me I'm silly to wait until my horses are 3 before starting with a saddle. We try to keep our animals for life and I want a sound horse. Not a 15yr old pasture ornament because they were started before they were ready or worked to hard to young.
